Environmental Jobs in Alaska: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a environmental in Alaska?
Most environmental positions in Alaska require at minimum a bachelor's degree in environmental science, biology, chemistry, or a related field. Roles involving waste management, air quality, or water systems often require registration or certification through the Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation. Specific credentials such as a Registered Environmental Manager or HAZWOPER certification strengthen candidacy considerably. Many Alaska employers also expect direct field experience in subarctic or remote conditions given the state's operating environment.
Which companies hire environmentals in Alaska?
Employers hiring environmentals in Alaska right now include Jacobs, Worley, and Nortech, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of July 2026. Alaska's environmental sector is also anchored by federal agencies, resource extraction companies, and engineering consulting firms managing compliance across the state's expansive and regulated land base.
Which Alaska cities have the most environmental jobs?
Anchorage, Fairbanks, and Juneau account for the most environmental openings in Alaska. Anchorage dominates as the state's commercial and regulatory hub, home to agency offices, engineering firms, and oil and gas operations, while Fairbanks draws openings tied to Interior mining activity and university-affiliated research, and Juneau concentrates positions connected to state government and Southeast Alaska fisheries oversight.
Are there remote environmental jobs in Alaska?
Yes, but they're rare. Environmental work in Alaska is largely field-based, requiring on-site sampling, inspections, and compliance monitoring across remote landscapes. About 31% of environmental openings tied to Alaska are remote or hybrid as of July 2026, reflecting that most roles require physical presence. Data analysis, report writing, and regulatory review positions are the likeliest candidates for any remote arrangement.
How can I get hired as a environmental in Alaska with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is through seasonal field technician or environmental monitoring assistant roles, which the Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, and engineering consulting firms in Anchorage regularly post. AmeriCorps programs operating in Alaska also place entry-level candidates in conservation and environmental monitoring work. A HAZWOPER certification or GIS coursework will separate a new applicant from the competition, and lateral entry from adjacent roles like laboratory technician or wildlife biological technician is common.
Where can I find and apply to environmental jobs in Alaska?
You can find and apply to environmental jobs in Alaska on Migrate Mate, which lists current Alaska openings across state agencies, federal operations, and private employers. Search the available roles, find the ones that match your background and target location, and apply directly through each listing.
