Experienced Project Manager Jobs in California: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a experienced project manager in California?
The standard California path starts with a bachelor's degree in business, engineering, or a related field, followed by several years of project coordination or junior PM experience. California does not issue a state-specific project manager license, but the Project Management Professional certification from the Project Management Institute is widely required by California employers. Many candidates also pursue Agile or Scrum credentials to meet the expectations of California's large technology and healthcare sectors.
How much do experienced project managers make in California?
Experienced project managers in California earn a median of about $120,910 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $69,180 for the lowest 10% to over $188,560 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire experienced project managers in California?
Employers hiring experienced project managers in California right now include Pse Consulting Engineers, Michaels Stores, and GreyOrange, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. California's concentration of defense contractors, health systems, and enterprise technology firms means demand is broad and consistent across multiple industries statewide.
Which California cities have the most experienced project manager jobs?
San Francisco, Los Angeles, and San Diego account for the largest share of experienced project manager openings in California. The Bay Area's density of technology companies and enterprise software firms drives volume there, Los Angeles draws demand from entertainment, aerospace, and healthcare, and San Diego's concentration of defense contractors and biotech employers sustains consistent openings in that market.
Are there remote experienced project manager jobs in California?
Yes, and more than most fields. About 21% of experienced project manager openings tied to California are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, reflecting how much of the role involves coordination, planning, and stakeholder communication rather than on-site supervision. IT program management and technology delivery roles are the most likely to be fully remote, while construction and facilities project management typically require on-site presence.
How can I get hired as a experienced project manager in California with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is moving into a project coordinator or program coordinator role, which large California employers in technology, healthcare, and construction regularly hire without requiring full PM experience. Kaiser Permanente, Salesforce, and major California public agencies run associate project manager programs that serve as structured on-ramps. Earning a CAPM from the Project Management Institute or a Scrum certification gives candidates a measurable credential that distinguishes them in California applicant pools before the first PM role.
Where can I find and apply to experienced project manager jobs in California?
