Family Medicine Physician Jobs in Iowa: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a family medicine physician in Iowa?
To practice as a family medicine physician in Iowa, you must hold an active license from the Iowa Board of Medicine, which requires completing medical school, finishing an accredited family medicine residency, passing the USMLE or COMLEX series, and submitting a licensure application. Most Iowa employers also expect board certification through the American Board of Family Medicine. The Iowa Board of Medicine oversees initial licensure, renewals, and any continuing medical education requirements.
How much do family medicine physicians make in Iowa?
Family medicine physicians in Iowa earn a median of about $265,200 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $116,900 for the lowest 10% to over $460,230 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire family medicine physicians in Iowa?
Employers hiring family medicine physicians in Iowa right now include MercyOne, Avera Health, and Trinity Health, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of August 2026. Iowa's hiring is led by large integrated health systems and federally designated rural health clinics that rely heavily on family medicine physicians to serve both urban and underserved communities.
Which Iowa cities have the most family medicine physician jobs?
Ankeny, Garner, and Waterloo have the most family medicine physician openings in Iowa. Des Moines supports the largest volume through its concentration of major health systems and outpatient networks, while Iowa City's demand is driven by University of Iowa Health Care, and Cedar Rapids draws hiring from regional systems like MercyOne and UnityPoint Health serving the Eastern Iowa corridor.
Are there remote family medicine physician jobs in Iowa?
Yes, but they're rare. Family medicine is a hands-on clinical specialty requiring in-person patient evaluation, so the vast majority of roles are on-site. About 4% of family medicine physician openings tied to Iowa are remote or hybrid as of August 2026, and those positions typically involve telehealth consultations, care coordination, or population health management rather than direct primary care visits.
How can I get hired as a family medicine physician in Iowa with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is completing your family medicine residency and applying directly to new-graduate or early-career positions at Iowa health systems. UnityPoint Health, University of Iowa Health Care, and MercyOne all recruit graduating residents and offer structured onboarding for physicians in their first years of independent practice. Rural health clinics and federally qualified health centers across Iowa actively recruit new graduates, often with loan repayment incentives. Obtaining Iowa Board of Medicine licensure and ABFM board eligibility before applications close will give you a clear edge.
Where can I find and apply to family medicine physician jobs in Iowa?
You can find and apply to family medicine physician jobs in Iowa on Migrate Mate, which lists current Iowa openings updated regularly. Search the listings to find roles that match your specialty, preferred location, and practice setting, then apply directly to the ones that fit.
