Financial Counselor Jobs in Alabama: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a financial counselor in Alabama?
Most Alabama employers expect a bachelor's degree in finance, business, social work, or a related field alongside a recognized counseling credential. The most widely accepted credentials are the Accredited Financial Counselor designation from AFCPE and the Certified Credit Counselor credential offered through NFCC member agencies. Alabama does not issue a separate state license for financial counselors, but nonprofit credit counseling agencies operating in the state must register with the Alabama Securities Commission.
Which companies hire financial counselors in Alabama?
Employers hiring financial counselors in Alabama right now include Magellan Health, Troy University, and Andalusia Health, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of September 2026. Alabama's healthcare systems, regional banks, and nonprofit credit counseling agencies are consistently among the most active hirers across the state.
Which Alabama cities have the most financial counselor jobs?
The cities with the most financial counselor openings in Alabama are Troy, Tuskegee, and Andalusia. Birmingham drives the largest share of demand through its concentration of regional bank headquarters, major hospital systems such as UAB Health System, and nonprofit financial wellness organizations, while Huntsville's growing professional workforce and Montgomery's state agency presence support steady hiring in those markets.
Are there remote financial counselor jobs in Alabama?
Yes, and more than many client-facing roles, since a large portion of financial counseling work involves phone or video appointments that translate well to remote settings. About 0% of financial counselor openings tied to Alabama are remote or hybrid as of September 2026, reflecting growing employer flexibility in this field. Debt management advising, student loan counseling, and telephone-based credit counseling sessions are the functions most commonly offered on a remote or hybrid basis.
How can I get hired as a financial counselor in Alabama with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is applying to a nonprofit credit counseling agency affiliated with an NFCC member organization, where structured training programs prepare candidates with no prior counseling background. UAB Health System and larger Alabama hospital networks regularly hire entry-level financial counselors or patient financial advocates and provide on-the-job training. Lateral moves from roles such as bank teller, loan processor, or social services case manager are recognized as relevant experience by Alabama employers. Earning an AFCPE student membership and completing its foundational coursework before applying gives candidates a measurable edge.
