Financial Counselor Jobs in New York: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a financial counselor in New York?
The most direct path is earning a bachelor's degree in finance, social work, or counseling, then obtaining a recognized professional credential such as the Accredited Financial Counselor or the Certified Financial Counselor designation through an NFCC-member agency. New York does not require a state-issued license specific to financial counseling, but many hospital and nonprofit employers require or strongly prefer an NFCC-affiliated credential alongside documented supervised counseling hours before hiring.
Which companies hire financial counselors in New York?
Employers hiring financial counselors in New York right now include United Health Services, D'Youville University, and New York University, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. New York's concentration of large hospital systems, credit unions, and nonprofit housing organizations makes it one of the broadest employer markets for this role in the region.
Which New York cities have the most financial counselor jobs?
Binghamton, Buffalo, and New York have the most financial counselor openings in New York. New York City drives the bulk of demand through its dense network of hospitals, housing nonprofits, and financial services firms, while Buffalo and Albany generate steady openings through regional health systems, state agencies, and community action organizations anchored in those metros.
Are there remote financial counselor jobs in New York?
Yes, and more than many client-facing roles, since a significant portion of financial counseling sessions can be conducted by phone or video. About 0% of financial counselor openings tied to New York are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, reflecting the shift toward telehealth and virtual client services. Debt management counseling and student loan advising positions tend to be the most consistently remote-eligible.
How can I get hired as a financial counselor in New York with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry point is a financial counseling associate or client services coordinator role at an NFCC-member nonprofit such as GreenPath or a local community action agency in New York City or Buffalo. Candidates moving from adjacent roles like benefits specialist, social work case manager, or bank teller have a strong footing. Completing an Accredited Financial Counselor candidacy program while working in an entry role accelerates hiring at larger institutions like NYC Health + Hospitals.
Where can I find and apply to financial counselor jobs in New York?
You can find and apply to financial counselor jobs in New York on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings across the state. Search the available roles, find the ones that fit your background and preferred location, and apply directly to the employers posting them.
