Food Service Manager Jobs in Michigan: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a food service manager in Michigan?
Michigan does not require a state-issued manager license, but most employers expect a current ServSafe Food Protection Manager Certification, which is recognized statewide under Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development food code guidelines. A two- or four-year degree in hospitality or food service management strengthens your candidacy, and community colleges such as Schoolcraft College and Lansing Community College offer relevant programs. Building experience in high-volume kitchen or catering roles first is the most common path into management in Michigan.
How much do food service managers make in Michigan?
Food service managers in Michigan earn a median of about $60,790 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $41,600 for the lowest 10% to over $93,180 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire food service managers in Michigan?
Employers hiring food service managers in Michigan right now include KFC, Wendy's, and Sodexo, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. Michigan's strong base of healthcare systems, universities, and contract foodservice operators means steady hiring that holds up even outside peak seasons.
Which Michigan cities have the most food service manager jobs?
Detroit, Dearborn, and Battle Creek account for the most food service manager openings in Michigan. Detroit leads because of its dense concentration of hospital systems, hotel properties, and large corporate campuses, while Grand Rapids draws volume from its growing hospitality scene and several major contract foodservice accounts, and Lansing adds steady demand from state government facilities and Michigan State University.
Are there remote food service manager jobs in Michigan?
Yes, but they're rare. Food service management is an inherently hands-on role requiring on-site oversight of kitchens, staff, and health inspections, so fully remote positions are uncommon. About 1% of food service manager openings tied to Michigan are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, and those are almost always in district or regional oversight roles rather than single-unit positions.
How can I get hired as a food service manager in Michigan with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is moving up from a shift lead, head cook, or catering coordinator role within the same organization. Large Michigan contract foodservice operators like Aramark and Compass Group run structured internal promotion pipelines and occasionally post assistant manager openings that accept candidates without prior management titles. Earning your ServSafe Food Protection Manager Certification before applying immediately distinguishes you, and applying to food service manager roles at Michigan hospital systems or university dining programs, which often post entry-level management positions with on-the-job training, is a practical first move.
Where can I find and apply to food service manager jobs in Michigan?
You can find and apply to food service manager jobs in Michigan on Migrate Mate, which lists current Michigan openings across healthcare, hospitality, contract foodservice, and institutional dining. Find the roles that fit your experience and location and apply directly.
