Verify your degree meets PERM requirements
PERM labor certification requires the employer to define minimum qualifications before filing. Confirm your orthoptics degree or allied health qualification maps to the job description DOL will evaluate, since credential mismatches can trigger audits or denials.
Get your foreign credentials evaluated early
U.S. employers and USCIS need documentation that your overseas orthoptics training is equivalent to a U.S. degree. A credential evaluation from a NACES-member organization speeds up the I-140 review and removes a common objection during PERM recruitment.
Target hospitals and academic medical centers
Large hospital systems and university-affiliated eye centers run established immigration programs and are more likely to sponsor EB-2 or EB-3 petitions for orthoptists than private practices, which rarely have in-house immigration counsel or prior PERM experience.
Search for sponsoring employers on Migrate Mate
Use Migrate Mate to filter orthoptist job listings by employers with active green card sponsorship history. This cuts out roles where you'd need to persuade an employer to file for the first time, which significantly extends your timeline.
Ask about PERM recruitment timing before accepting
DOL requires employers to complete a mandatory recruitment period before filing PERM, typically 60 to 90 days. Ask prospective employers whether they've started this process or plan to, so you can gauge realistic green card timelines from your offer date.
Check prevailing wage requirements using OFLC Wage Search
Your employer must offer at least the DOL prevailing wage for orthoptist roles in your work location. Use OFLC Wage Search to look up the wage level before negotiating your offer, since a below-threshold salary forces the employer to refile or amend.

Find Orthoptist JobsOrthoptist Green Card Sponsorship: Frequently Asked Questions
Do orthoptist roles typically qualify for EB-2 or EB-3 green card sponsorship?
Most orthoptist positions qualify under EB-3 as skilled workers or professionals, since the role generally requires a bachelor's degree or a recognized orthoptics program. If you hold a master's degree or the employer defines the position as requiring an advanced degree, EB-2 may apply. Your employer's attorney makes the final determination based on the job description filed with DOL.
How does green card sponsorship differ from H-1B sponsorship for orthoptists?
H-1B is a temporary work visa subject to an annual lottery cap, while EB-2 and EB-3 green card sponsorship leads directly to permanent residency with no lottery. The PERM process takes longer up front, typically one to two years before USCIS approves the I-140, but you're building toward a permanent status rather than renewing a visa every two or three years.
What does the PERM labor certification process involve for an orthoptist hire?
PERM requires your employer to conduct a DOL-mandated recruitment process to demonstrate no qualified U.S. workers are available for the role. This includes job postings, documentation of applicant review, and a prevailing wage determination from DOL. The employer then files the ETA 9089 application. The entire PERM stage typically takes six to twelve months before the I-140 petition can be filed.
How can I find orthoptist jobs where employers are already willing to sponsor a green card?
Search Migrate Mate to identify orthoptist openings at employers with documented green card sponsorship history. Targeting employers who have sponsored before means the PERM infrastructure is already in place, reducing the risk that an employer agrees verbally but stalls during the filing process.
Does my state orthoptic or optometry license affect the green card sponsorship timeline?
Yes. USCIS and DOL expect that you can legally practice in the state where you'll work. If your foreign credentials require additional steps to obtain a state license, this can delay your start date and, in turn, the PERM filing. Securing licensure or a temporary practice permit before your employer initiates PERM keeps the process on track.
