Translate your credentials into PERM language
PERM labor certification requires your employer to define minimum job requirements. Make sure your degree field, professional designations like CPCU or AU, and underwriting-specific coursework are documented precisely so they match the certified job description.
Target carriers with established immigration programs
Large property-casualty carriers, reinsurers, and Lloyd's syndicates are far more likely to have in-house immigration counsel familiar with PERM filings for underwriting roles than regional or surplus lines brokers.
Search green card sponsorship data on Migrate Mate
Filter Underwriting Assistant openings by employers with documented EB-2 or EB-3 filing history. Migrate Mate surfaces this PERM data so you can target companies already familiar with sponsoring this specific occupation.
Clarify the EB-3 specialty occupation standard early
Underwriting Assistant roles typically qualify under EB-3 as skilled workers requiring a bachelor's degree. Confirm with your prospective employer that the posted job duties, not just the title, reflect a degree requirement DOL will accept during PERM audit.
Use OFLC Wage Search before salary negotiations
PERM requires your employer to pay at least the DOL prevailing wage for your occupation and location. Running an OFLC Wage Search before your offer lets you benchmark what wage tier your role must meet, avoiding surprises during the labor certification filing.
Green Card Underwriting Assistant: Frequently Asked Questions
Can an Underwriting Assistant role qualify for EB-2 or EB-3 green card sponsorship?
Most Underwriting Assistant positions qualify under EB-3 as skilled worker roles requiring a bachelor's degree in business, finance, or a related field. EB-2 sponsorship is possible if the employer can justify an advanced degree requirement or if you have equivalent professional credentials that meet the advanced-degree standard. The job duties in the official PERM filing, not just the job title, determine which category applies.
How does PERM green card sponsorship differ from H-1B sponsorship for this role?
H-1B visa sponsorship grants temporary work authorization in two-year or three-year increments and is subject to an annual lottery cap. PERM green card sponsorship is a permanent pathway with no annual cap at the EB-3 level for most countries outside India and China. The PERM process requires your employer to run a supervised recruitment process through DOL before filing, which typically adds six to twelve months to the overall timeline compared to an H-1B petition.
What documentation should I have ready before asking an employer to sponsor my green card?
Gather official transcripts, degree certificates, and any professional designations such as CPCU or AU. If your degree is from outside the U.S., obtain a credential evaluation from an organization like NACES. Document your underwriting-specific work history with offer letters, promotion records, and performance reviews, since the PERM recruitment record must demonstrate that no qualified U.S. worker was displaced by your hire.
How can I find Underwriting Assistant jobs that already offer green card sponsorship?
Migrate Mate lets you filter Underwriting Assistant openings by employers with verified EB-2 and EB-3 PERM filing history, so you're targeting companies that have already navigated the labor certification process for similar roles. This is faster than cold-applying and hoping a hiring manager will agree to sponsor, especially in a field like underwriting where sponsorship willingness varies widely by employer size and ownership structure.
What is the typical timeline from PERM filing to receiving a green card as an Underwriting Assistant?
The PERM labor certification stage alone currently averages well over a year at DOL due to analyst review backlogs, followed by I-140 adjudication at USCIS and then adjustment of status or consular processing. For nationals of most countries, the entire sequence from PERM filing to green card approval typically runs two to four years. Nationals of India and China face longer waits due to per-country annual limits under the EB-3 preference category.
