Job Description/Preferred Qualifications
The Cloud Platform Engineer will build, automate, secure, and operate cloud-based platform solutions across multiple cloud platforms — GCP, Azure, and AWS, with GCP and Azure as the preferred focus. This role requires a strong, practical understanding of cloud security, identity and access management, networking, and secure-by-design principles, in addition to IaaS and PaaS best practices.
Responsibilities:
- Build scalable, resilient, and secure cloud platforms on IaaS/PaaS across GCP, Azure, and AWS (focus on GCP and Azure).
- Execute cloud migrations — re-host, re-platform, refactor, and re-architect — with automation and security posture improvement.
- Drive application and infrastructure modernization for scalability, performance, and efficiency.
- Partner with engineering and security teams to implement reference architectures, reusable modules, and security guardrails.
- Optimize infrastructure for performance, reliability, security hardening, and cost efficiency.
- Implement and maintain cloud security controls and governance guardrails aligned with industry standards.
- Build secure cloud networking, including VPN, Cloud Interconnect, ExpressRoute, and Direct Connect.
- Configure network segmentation, micro-segmentation, and zero-trust controls.
- Secure and operate containers, Kubernetes (GKE/AKS/EKS), serverless, and microservices.
- Develop Infrastructure as Code with Terraform (primary), plus Azure Bicep/ARM, Google Config Connector, and AWS CloudFormation.
- Build DevSecOps CI/CD pipelines with integrated security scanning, policy enforcement, and compliance validation.
- Implement observability — logging, monitoring, alerting, and incident response integration.
- Evaluate emerging cloud and automation technologies to improve reliability, security, and resilience.
- Create platform documentation, runbooks, and architecture/security diagrams.
- Support cloud operating models: FinOps, tagging standards, and resource governance.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or a related field with six (6) years of related experience.
- Five (5) years of hands-on cloud platform engineering or infrastructure experience, including ownership and operation of secure production environments.
- Proficient in at least one major cloud platform — GCP or Azure preferred, with AWS in scope — and strong cross-cloud fundamentals.
- Solid, practical understanding of cloud networking, cloud security, containers, Kubernetes, serverless technologies, and microservices.
- Hands-on experience with cloud security controls, including IAM, encryption, key management, network security, and zero-trust principles.
- Working knowledge of cloud governance, monitoring, observability, FinOps, and cost management.
- Demonstrated experience embedding security into IaC and CI/CD pipelines (DevSecOps).
- Strong communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to work effectively across engineering, platform, and security teams.

Align your resume to SOC codes
Cloud Platform Engineer roles map to specific SOC codes your employer uses on the LCA. Tailor your resume to reflect the exact duties tied to those codes so the job description and your credentials align when USCIS reviews specialty occupation.
Verify prevailing wages before negotiating
Use the OFLC Wage Search to look up the prevailing wage for your SOC code and work location before you negotiate an offer. Employers must certify they'll meet that wage on the LCA, so knowing the floor protects you and speeds filing.
Target employers with cap-exempt partnerships
Universities, nonprofits affiliated with research institutions, and government research organizations are cap-exempt H-1B employers. Cloud engineering roles at these organizations skip the lottery entirely, which matters if you're entering the cap-subject pool for the first time.
Search LCA-verified employers on Migrate Mate
Filter your search on Migrate Mate by employers who have filed LCAs for cloud platform and infrastructure roles. That filing history confirms the employer already understands H-1B sponsorship mechanics, reducing the risk of delays from inexperienced HR teams.
Clarify contractor versus direct-hire status early
Cloud platform roles are frequently filled through IT staffing firms, but H-1B employer-employee relationships get scrutinized more heavily in contracting arrangements. Ask whether the sponsoring entity is the end client or the staffing company before the offer advances to the LCA stage.
Time your offer to the USCIS registration window
H-1B cap-subject registrations open each March for an October 1 start date. If you receive an offer in January or February, ask whether the employer will register you in the current cycle or defer to the next, since that gap directly affects your start date.
H-1B Visa Cloud Platform Engineer: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Cloud Platform Engineer role qualify as a specialty occupation for H-1B purposes?
Yes. Cloud Platform Engineer roles require at least a bachelor's degree in computer science, information systems, or a related engineering field, which satisfies the USCIS specialty occupation standard. The role's reliance on theoretical and practical application of cloud architecture, infrastructure automation, and systems design consistently supports specialty occupation determinations.
Which employers sponsor H-1B visas for Cloud Platform Engineer positions?
Employers across cloud providers, enterprise technology companies, financial services firms, and large healthcare systems regularly file H-1B LCAs for cloud platform roles. Migrate Mate lets you filter specifically for employers with verified LCA filing history in cloud and infrastructure engineering, so you can focus your applications on companies already experienced with H-1B sponsorship.
How does the LCA prevailing wage work for Cloud Platform Engineer roles?
The employer must file an LCA with DOL certifying they'll pay at least the prevailing wage for your SOC code and work location. Cloud platform roles typically fall under software developer or computer systems engineer codes. You can verify the applicable wage level using the OFLC Wage Search before accepting an offer to confirm the offer meets or exceeds that threshold.
Can I work remotely as a Cloud Platform Engineer on an H-1B visa?
Remote work is permitted, but each worksite must be covered by a certified LCA. If you work from a location not listed on the original LCA, your employer must file an amended or new LCA for that location before you begin working there. USCIS has scrutinized worksites listed as client locations or home offices, so confirm your employer's process for handling location changes.
What happens to my H-1B status if my Cloud Platform Engineer role changes significantly?
A material change in job duties, title, or work location can require an amended H-1B petition filed with USCIS before the change takes effect. Moving from individual contributor cloud work to an architecture or leadership role, for example, may constitute a material change. Ask your employer to confirm whether the updated job description triggers an amendment obligation before you transition.
