Align your degree to the role
USCIS scrutinizes the degree-to-job match for Cost Analyst petitions. A finance, accounting, industrial engineering, or business analytics degree strengthens your case. A general business degree without quantitative coursework can trigger a Request for Evidence.
Look up prevailing wage before negotiating
Your employer's H-1B petition must certify a wage at or above the DOL prevailing wage for Cost Analyst roles in your work location. Use the OFLC Wage Search to check Level I through Level IV wages before your offer letter is finalized.
Target industries with consistent H-1B filing history
Manufacturing, defense contracting, healthcare systems, and large consulting firms file H-1B petitions for Cost Analysts more consistently than smaller employers. Use Migrate Mate to filter Cost Analyst openings by employers with verified H-1B LCA filing records.
Verify the SOC code on your LCA
Employers typically file Cost Analyst LCAs under SOC code 13-2011. Ask your employer or their attorney to confirm the SOC code before DOL certification. A misclassification can complicate your petition and delay approval.
Start the LCA process before your OPT expires
The DOL must certify your employer's LCA before USCIS can accept the I-129 petition. If you're on OPT, build in at least 60 days for LCA certification plus USCIS processing time to avoid a gap in work authorization.
Check your O*NET profile during interviews
If an employer questions whether Cost Analyst qualifies as a specialty occupation, reference the O*NET occupation profile, which documents the degree requirements and analytical skill demands that support H-1B eligibility for the role.
H-1B Visa Cost Analyst: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Cost Analyst role qualify as an H-1B specialty occupation?
Yes. Cost Analyst positions qualify as a specialty occupation when the role requires at least a bachelor's degree in finance, accounting, economics, engineering, or a closely related analytical field. USCIS evaluates the specific duties in your job description, not just the title, so your offer letter should clearly reflect the degree requirement and analytical responsibilities tied to the position.
Which employers sponsor H-1B visas for Cost Analyst positions?
Manufacturing companies, defense contractors, healthcare systems, and large consulting firms are among the most consistent H-1B sponsors for Cost Analyst roles. Government contractors in particular rely heavily on cost analysts for compliance with cost accounting standards and regularly sponsor H-1B petitions for this function. Migrate Mate shows Cost Analyst openings filtered by employers with verified H-1B LCA filing history so you can target your search.
What happens to my H-1B if I move from cost analysis to a different role at the same employer?
A material change in your job duties, title, or work location generally requires your employer to file an amended H-1B petition with USCIS before the change takes effect. Moving into a senior finance role, a management position, or a different department can each trigger this requirement. Confirm with your employer's immigration attorney whether the new role's duties differ substantially from what was certified in your original petition.
How do I verify the prevailing wage for a Cost Analyst H-1B petition?
The DOL sets prevailing wages for Cost Analysts by geographic location and experience level using the Standard Occupational Classification system. You can look up the applicable wage for your work location and level using the OFLC Wage Search before accepting an offer. Your employer's LCA must certify a wage at or above the applicable prevailing wage, and that wage must be paid throughout your H-1B status.
Can I switch Cost Analyst employers while on H-1B without losing my status?
Yes, under H-1B portability rules you can start working for a new employer as soon as they file an H-1B transfer petition with USCIS, as long as your previous H-1B was lawfully approved and you haven't been out of status. You don't need to wait for USCIS to approve the new petition before starting. The new employer must file before your current authorized stay expires.
