H-1B Visa Database Engineer Jobs
Database Engineer roles qualify as H-1B specialty occupations under USCIS guidelines, requiring at least a bachelor's degree in computer science, information systems, or a related field. Employers file an LCA with DOL certifying prevailing wage compliance before your H-1B petition can proceed. The annual cap means timing your job search around the April lottery window matters.

Verify your degree supports specialty occupation
USCIS requires your degree field to directly relate to database engineering work. A computer science or information systems degree is straightforward. An unrelated degree paired with database certifications may trigger an RFE, so document any supplementary coursework before applying.
Check LCA wage levels before accepting offers
Use the OFLC Wage Search to look up the prevailing wage for Database Engineer roles in your target city before negotiating. An offer below DOL's wage level for your experience tier means the employer can't legally file your LCA.
Target employers with active H-1B filing history
Search Migrate Mate to find Database Engineer roles filtered by employers with verified H-1B LCA filing history. This removes employers who've never navigated the process, saving you from offers that stall at the sponsorship conversation.
Distinguish database subtypes when evaluating roles
O*NET separates database administrators from database architects and data engineers. Confirm the job description matches your actual title, since USCIS scrutinizes whether the role genuinely requires your specific degree field, not just database skills broadly.
Request premium processing when project timelines are fixed
If your employer has a hard project deadline tied to your start date, ask them to file I-129 with premium processing through USCIS. Standard adjudication timelines can run several months, which creates risk for roles requiring immediate infrastructure ownership.

Find Database Engineer JobsDatabase Engineer H-1B Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Database Engineer role qualify as a specialty occupation for H-1B purposes?
Yes. USCIS classifies Database Engineer as a specialty occupation because the role typically requires at least a bachelor's degree in computer science, information systems, or a closely related field. Employers must document in the LCA that the position's duties require this specific theoretical and technical knowledge, not just general IT experience.
How do I find employers who will actually sponsor H-1B visas for Database Engineer jobs?
Migrate Mate filters Database Engineer listings by employers with verified DOL LCA filing history, so you're not guessing which companies have gone through the H-1B process before. Targeting employers with an established filing track record significantly reduces the risk of an offer falling through at the sponsorship stage.
Can a database-related certification substitute for a bachelor's degree on an H-1B petition?
Not directly. USCIS requires a U.S. bachelor's degree or its equivalent in a specific field related to the role. A certification alone won't satisfy this. However, three years of progressive, specialized work experience can substitute for each year of missing formal education when establishing degree equivalency, per USCIS evaluation standards.
What happens to my H-1B petition if my employer changes my job title from Database Engineer to a different role after filing?
A material change in job duties, title, or work location can require the employer to file an amended H-1B petition with USCIS, including a new LCA if the wage level or occupational classification changes. Moving from Database Engineer to a managerial or architect title mid-petition is a common trigger for this requirement.
Do cloud database skills affect how USCIS evaluates my H-1B specialty occupation claim?
Cloud platform expertise doesn't change the specialty occupation analysis, but it does affect the LCA prevailing wage. Database Engineers working with cloud-native infrastructure often fall under different SOC codes than traditional DBA roles. Confirm your employer's LCA uses the SOC code that accurately reflects your duties, since a mismatch can expose the petition to an RFE.
