Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding H-1B Visa Sponsorship as a Field Service Specialist
Verify your role meets specialty occupation
USCIS requires Field Service Specialist positions to require a specific bachelor's degree, not just any degree. Pull the O*NET profile for your job code and confirm the education requirement aligns with your petition before your employer files.
Target employers with E-Verify enrollment
STEM-adjacent field service roles at defense contractors, medical device manufacturers, and aerospace firms require E-Verify enrollment. Employers already enrolled face fewer compliance hurdles when sponsoring your H-1B, which reduces petition delays.
Check prevailing wage before negotiating your offer
Use the OFLC Wage Search to look up the prevailing wage for your specific job code and work location before you accept an offer. Your employer's LCA must certify a wage at or above that level, so knowing the floor strengthens your negotiation.
Search verified H-1B sponsors on Migrate Mate
Filter Field Service Specialist listings on Migrate Mate by employers with confirmed H-1B LCA filing history. This cuts time spent on companies that have never sponsored, so you're only applying where actual sponsorship has occurred.
Document travel and multi-site work clearly
Field service roles often involve work at multiple client sites, which requires your employer to file additional LCA postings for each location. Clarify your territory with your hiring manager before the I-129 is filed to avoid amendment costs later.
Time your application around the cap lottery
H-1B cap registrations open in March for an October 1 start date. If you're already on OPT, confirm your OPT end date against that timeline. A cap-gap extension covers you from OPT expiration through September 30 if you're selected.
H-1B Visa Field Service Specialist: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Field Service Specialist role qualify for H-1B sponsorship?
It depends on how the employer defines the position. USCIS approves H-1B petitions for Field Service Specialist roles when the job requires a bachelor's degree in a specific field such as electrical engineering, electronics technology, or biomedical engineering. Roles described as requiring any bachelor's degree regardless of field are more likely to receive a Request for Evidence. The job description your employer submits with the LCA and I-129 needs to connect the degree requirement directly to the duties.
Which industries sponsor H-1B visas for Field Service Specialists?
Medical device companies, industrial automation firms, semiconductor equipment manufacturers, and telecommunications infrastructure providers are among the most consistent H-1B sponsors for this role. These employers rely on technically credentialed specialists to install, calibrate, and service complex equipment. You can browse employers with verified LCA filing history for this occupation on Migrate Mate to identify which companies have sponsored the role in your target industry.
How does multi-site field work affect my H-1B petition?
If your role requires regular work at client locations outside your employer's primary address, your employer must file a separate Labor Condition Application posting for each worksite where you'll spend more than 60 continuous workdays. Failing to do this is a DOL compliance violation. Before your I-129 is filed, confirm with your employer which sites are in scope and whether the LCA covers all of them to avoid enforcement issues.
Can I switch Field Service Specialist employers on H-1B?
Yes. H-1B portability under AC21 lets you start working for a new employer as soon as the new I-129 petition is filed, provided your previous petition was approved and you've maintained valid status. Your new employer must file a fresh I-129 and a new LCA before your first day. Because field service roles vary significantly in how employers define specialty occupation, make sure the new job description still meets the degree-requirement standard USCIS expects.
What happens to my H-1B if I'm placed at a long-term client site?
If your employer places you at a single client site for an extended period, USCIS may scrutinize whether your employer or the client is the true employer of record. This is most common in IT staffing arrangements but can arise in field service contracts too. Your employer should retain control over your day-to-day work, set your pay, and have the right to terminate your assignment. Petitions where the client controls the work are more likely to face denial or a Request for Evidence.
