Align your degree to the role
USCIS scrutinizes whether your degree field directly relates to financial planning and analysis. A finance, accounting, economics, or business analytics degree strengthens your petition. A general business degree without relevant coursework can trigger a Request for Evidence.
Verify prevailing wage before accepting offers
Your offered salary must meet the DOL prevailing wage for your job title, location, and experience level. Run the OFLC Wage Search before you negotiate so you know the floor your employer must certify on the LCA.
Target employers with corporate FP&A teams
Companies with dedicated FP&A functions, not just generalist finance roles, file H-1B petitions more reliably. Use Migrate Mate to filter for employers with verified LCA filings under financial analyst occupation codes before you apply.
Check if the employer is E-Verify enrolled
H-1B sponsoring employers must participate in E-Verify. Ask your recruiter early, or confirm through the E-Verify employer search, because discovering non-enrollment after an offer delays or kills the filing timeline.
Request premium processing for cap-subject filings
FP&A roles often have start-date dependencies tied to budget cycles or fiscal year planning. If your employer is filing a cap-subject H-1B, ask about USCIS premium processing to get a decision within 15 business days rather than waiting months.
Document your FP&A scope with O*NET language
When your employer drafts the H-1B support letter, the job duties should map to the O*NET occupation profile for Financial Analysts. Duties framed around budgeting, forecasting, and variance analysis reduce RFE risk compared to vague descriptions.

Find Financial Planning Analyst JobsFinancial Planning Analyst H-1B Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Financial Planning Analyst role qualify as an H-1B specialty occupation?
Yes. USCIS consistently approves Financial Planning Analyst petitions as specialty occupations because the role normally requires at least a bachelor's degree in finance, accounting, economics, or a closely related field. Employers strengthen the case by documenting that the position involves complex financial modeling, budget forecasting, and variance analysis that cannot be performed without that specific degree background.
Which employers sponsor H-1B visas for Financial Planning Analyst positions?
Large corporations with dedicated FP&A functions, financial services firms, technology companies, and healthcare systems are the most consistent sponsors. Smaller companies that rely on a single generalist finance hire are less likely to sponsor. Migrate Mate shows employers with verified LCA filing history for financial analyst occupation codes, so you can identify active sponsors before applying.
What happens to my H-1B status if I get promoted from Financial Planning Analyst to Senior FP&A Manager?
A promotion that changes your job duties, title, or wage level typically requires your employer to file an amended H-1B petition with USCIS before the change takes effect. Moving into a managerial role with substantially different responsibilities is not covered by your original petition. Your employer's immigration counsel should review whether an amendment is needed based on the actual scope change.
Can I switch employers during H-1B cap-gap or between lottery cycles?
Yes, through H-1B portability under AC21. If you're moving to a new employer while your existing H-1B is valid, your new employer files an H-1B transfer petition and you can start working as soon as that petition is received by USCIS. The new FP&A role must be in the same or a substantially similar occupational classification as your original approved petition.
How does the DOL prevailing wage requirement affect Financial Planning Analyst job offers?
Your employer must certify on the LCA that your offered salary meets or exceeds the DOL prevailing wage for your specific job title, geographic area, and experience level. You can look up the applicable wage tier using the OFLC Wage Search before accepting an offer. Employers who offer below prevailing wage cannot legally file the LCA, which stops the H-1B petition entirely.
