Match your degree to the SOC code
USCIS evaluates whether your degree field directly relates to the Insurance Collector role. Pull the O*NET profile for SOC 43-3021 and document how your finance or business degree maps to the specific duties in your job offer letter.
Verify the prevailing wage before accepting offers
Use the OFLC Wage Search to look up the wage level for your exact work location before negotiations. Your employer's LCA must certify at least the Level I prevailing wage, and accepting below that figure creates a compliance problem at filing.
Target employers with active LCA filing history
Search Migrate Mate to find employers who have filed LCAs for insurance and collections roles. Companies with recent H-1B filing history already have internal processes in place, which shortens the timeline between offer and petition submission.
Clarify the specialty occupation argument upfront
Insurance Collector petitions face RFEs when employers can't show the role requires a specific degree rather than any bachelor's degree. Ask the hiring manager to document why a finance or accounting background is required, not just preferred, before the I-129 is filed.
Confirm E-Verify enrollment before your start date
Your employer must be enrolled in E-Verify to employ H-1B workers. If you're joining a smaller insurance firm or collections agency, confirm their E-Verify status during the offer stage so any enrollment gap doesn't delay your Form I-9 completion.
File premium processing if your start date is tight
USCIS offers premium processing on Form I-129 for a 15-business-day adjudication window. If your offer letter has a specific start date tied to a collections cycle or fiscal year, the extra cost protects against standard processing delays running past that date.
H-1B Visa Insurance Collector: Frequently Asked Questions
Does an Insurance Collector role qualify as a specialty occupation for H-1B purposes?
It can, but USCIS scrutinizes collections roles closely. Your employer must demonstrate the position normally requires a bachelor's degree in a specific field such as finance, accounting, or business administration, and that your degree directly relates to those duties. Generic claims that any degree qualifies will typically trigger a Request for Evidence.
How do I find employers who actually sponsor H-1B visas for Insurance Collector positions?
Browse Migrate Mate to filter employers by verified LCA filing history for insurance and collections roles. DOL Labor Condition Application data shows which companies have sponsored H-1B workers in similar occupations, so you can prioritize outreach to employers already familiar with the process rather than educating a reluctant HR team from scratch.
What prevailing wage level applies to Insurance Collector H-1B positions?
The applicable wage level depends on your experience, the complexity of the role, and your work location. Use the OFLC Wage Search and select SOC code 43-3021 for Bill and Account Collectors to find the four wage levels for your metro area. Your employer's LCA must certify at or above the level that matches your actual duties and seniority.
Can I change employers while on H-1B if I'm working as an Insurance Collector?
Yes. H-1B portability under AC21 lets you start working for a new employer as soon as the new I-129 petition is filed, without waiting for approval, as long as your previous H-1B was approved and you've been in valid status. The new employer must file a transfer petition before your current position ends to preserve that portability protection.
What documents should I prepare before an employer files my H-1B petition for an Insurance Collector role?
Gather your official degree transcripts, any professional certifications in collections or credit management, and a detailed job description that links each duty to your specific field of study. USCIS may also request evidence showing the industry standard requires a degree for this role, so collecting comparable job postings from other employers strengthens the specialty occupation argument.
