Align your degree to FP&A requirements
USCIS requires your degree field to directly relate to financial planning and analysis work. A finance, accounting, economics, or MBA credential maps cleanly. A general business degree without quantitative coursework can trigger a Request for Evidence.
Check prevailing wage tiers before negotiating
Look up the FP&A Manager SOC code in the OFLC Wage Search before any offer discussion. Your employer's LCA must certify a wage at or above the prevailing wage for your geographic area and experience level.
Target employers with LCA filing history on Migrate Mate
Search Migrate Mate to filter FP&A Manager roles by employers who have certified LCAs for this title. Confirmed filing history tells you the employer understands the H-1B process and has done it before.
Ask about cap-exempt employer eligibility
Universities, nonprofit research organizations, and government research institutions are cap-exempt, letting you start work on October 1 without entering the lottery. FP&A roles at hospital systems or university endowments often qualify under this pathway.
Confirm the LCA covers your actual work location
FP&A Managers frequently work across multiple offices or remote sites. USCIS requires the LCA to list every worksite where you'll spend significant time. A mismatch between the certified location and your actual workplace is a compliance violation.
Use the 60-day grace period strategically
If your FP&A role ends before your H-1B expires, USCIS allows a 60-day grace period to find a new sponsoring employer. Use that window to secure a new employer and have them file a transfer petition before the period closes.
H-1B Visa Financial Planning And Analysis Manager: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Financial Planning and Analysis Manager role qualify as an H-1B specialty occupation?
Yes. FP&A Manager is a specialty occupation because USCIS recognizes it as requiring at least a bachelor's degree in a directly related field such as finance, accounting, or economics. The role's analytical and strategic finance duties satisfy the theoretical and practical application standard USCIS uses to evaluate specialty occupation status.
Which employers sponsor H-1B visas for FP&A Manager positions?
Large corporations, financial services firms, technology companies, healthcare systems, and Fortune 500 manufacturers regularly sponsor H-1B visas for FP&A Managers. Migrate Mate lets you filter open roles by employers with verified LCA filing history for this specific title, so you're targeting companies that have already demonstrated willingness to sponsor.
How does the prevailing wage requirement affect FP&A Manager H-1B sponsorship?
Your employer's LCA must certify a wage at or above the DOL prevailing wage for the FP&A Manager SOC code in your metropolitan area. The OFLC Wage Search shows four wage levels tied to experience and complexity. Employers who offer below the certified prevailing wage cannot legally file an LCA, so knowing the threshold before negotiating protects you.
Can I transfer my H-1B to a new employer if I change FP&A jobs?
Yes. Under H-1B portability rules, you can start working for a new employer as soon as they file a transfer petition, without waiting for approval, as long as your current H-1B is valid and you've maintained lawful status. The new employer files a new LCA and I-129 for the FP&A Manager role at their location.
What documentation does my employer need to prove FP&A Manager is a specialty occupation?
Your employer needs to show that the FP&A Manager role normally requires a specific bachelor's degree or higher in a related field, not just any degree. Supporting evidence includes the job description, internal hiring standards, O*NET occupation data for the financial manager category, and proof that similar positions at comparable companies require equivalent educational credentials.
