Verify your degree field matches the role
USCIS requires a direct relationship between your degree and the Government Affairs Manager position. Degrees in public policy, political science, law, or international relations satisfy this. A business degree alone may trigger an RFE without supplemental documentation.
Target employers with in-house government relations teams
Corporations with dedicated public affairs or regulatory divisions sponsor H-1B petitions far more reliably than standalone lobbying shops. Large regulated industries like pharmaceuticals, energy, and financial services consistently file LCAs for this occupation code.
Search verified LCA data on Migrate Mate
Filter by SOC code 11-1011 or 11-9199 to surface employers who've filed Labor Condition Applications for government affairs roles. Migrate Mate shows which organizations have active H-1B filing history, so you're not guessing at sponsorship willingness.
Check the prevailing wage before negotiating your offer
Use the OFLC Wage Search to look up the Level I through Level IV wage for your target city before your offer stage. Your employer must certify your salary meets the prevailing wage in the LCA, so knowing the floor strengthens your negotiation position.
Prepare a specialty occupation justification document
Government affairs roles face higher RFE rates than technical jobs because USCIS scrutinizes whether the position truly requires a specific bachelor's-level field. Ask your employer's immigration attorney to document how policy analysis, legislative drafting, or regulatory work is central to the role.
Understand your 60-day grace period when changing employers
If your current H-1B ends or you're laid off, you have a 60-day grace period to find a new sponsoring employer and get an H-1B transfer filed. Your new employer can file the transfer petition before USCIS approves it, letting you start work immediately upon filing.

Find Government Affairs Manager JobsGovernment Affairs Manager H-1B Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Government Affairs Manager role qualify as a specialty occupation for H-1B purposes?
Yes, provided the employer can document that the position requires a bachelor's degree in a specific field such as public policy, political science, law, or government relations. Roles focused on legislative strategy, regulatory compliance, or policy analysis typically meet the specialty occupation standard. Generic management duties without a field-specific degree requirement can complicate approval.
Which types of employers sponsor H-1B visas for Government Affairs Managers?
Large corporations in regulated industries, trade associations, non-profit advocacy organizations, and consulting firms with public affairs practices are the most consistent sponsors. You can browse employers with verified H-1B LCA filing history for government affairs and public policy roles directly on Migrate Mate, filtered by location and industry.
Can I transfer my H-1B to a new employer if I switch Government Affairs roles?
Yes. H-1B portability lets you start working for a new sponsor as soon as they file a transfer petition with USCIS, without waiting for approval. Your new employer still needs to file an LCA with DOL before submitting the I-129, certifying your salary meets prevailing wage for the new role and location.
How does the H-1B cap lottery affect hiring timelines for Government Affairs positions?
Most private-sector employers are subject to the 85,000-slot annual cap, with registration opening each March for an October 1 start date. Non-profit research organizations, government entities, and higher education institutions are cap-exempt, meaning they can sponsor H-1B petitions year-round without waiting for a lottery slot.
What SOC occupation codes are typically used for Government Affairs Manager H-1B filings?
Employers most commonly file under SOC 11-1011 (Chief Executives), 11-9199 (Managers, All Other), or 13-1041 (Compliance Officers), depending on how the role is structured. The SOC code affects the prevailing wage tier pulled from the OFLC Wage Search, so confirming the correct code with your employer's immigration counsel before the LCA is filed matters for your salary floor.
