Match your degree to the role
USCIS requires a direct relationship between your academic field and the NPD role. A mechanical engineering degree supports a product engineer title; a general business degree often won't. Align your resume title and job description to that degree field before applying.
Search LCA filings by occupation code
NPD roles file under SOC codes like 17-2141 (Mechanical Engineers) or 11-9199 (Managers, NEC). Use Migrate Mate to filter employers by LCA filing history for those codes, so you're targeting companies with a proven H-1B track record in this function.
Flag cross-functional roles during offer review
NPD positions often blend engineering, marketing, and operations. If your offer letter describes duties across multiple departments, ask your employer to narrow the specialty occupation definition in the LCA to a single qualifying field to avoid USCIS RFEs.
Check prevailing wage before negotiating salary
Your employer's LCA must certify a wage at or above the DOL prevailing wage for your SOC code and work location. Run your role and city through the OFLC Wage Search before salary negotiations so you know the floor DOL will require.
Verify E-Verify enrollment before accepting an offer
If you're on OPT STEM extension, your employer must be enrolled in E-Verify before your start date. Confirm enrollment status directly with HR during the offer stage, not after you've given notice to your current employer.
Plan the H-1B cap timeline around product launch cycles
H-1B registration opens in March for an October 1 start date. NPD teams often plan headcount around product roadmaps. Discuss with your hiring manager whether your start date can align with the fiscal year start to avoid a six-month employment gap.

Find New Product Development JobsNew Product Development H-1B Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a New Product Development job title qualify as a specialty occupation for H-1B purposes?
The job title alone doesn't determine eligibility; the actual duties do. USCIS evaluates whether the role theoretically and practically requires at least a bachelor's degree in a specific field like mechanical engineering, industrial design, or materials science. Generic titles that accept candidates from any degree background often trigger RFEs, so the offer letter and job description need to tie duties to a specific academic discipline.
How do I find employers who have sponsored H-1B visas for New Product Development roles before?
Migrate Mate filters employers by DOL Labor Condition Application filing history, which shows you which companies have certified H-1B wages for NPD-related SOC codes in the past. This is more reliable than asking employers upfront, since companies with a track record of NPD sponsorship have already built the internal process to handle petitions for these roles.
Can I transfer my H-1B to a new employer mid-product development cycle without losing status?
Yes, through H-1B portability under AC21 you can start working for a new employer as soon as USCIS receives the transfer petition, without waiting for approval. Your status is protected as long as your previous H-1B was approved and you filed before it expired. The new employer needs to file a new I-129 with an LCA matching the NPD role's SOC code and location.
What SOC code does USCIS typically use for New Product Development positions?
It depends on where the role sits in the organization. Engineering-led NPD roles typically file under 17-2141 (Mechanical Engineers) or 17-2112 (Industrial Engineers). Design-heavy roles may use 27-1021 (Commercial and Industrial Designers). Reviewing O*NET profiles for each code helps confirm which best fits your specific duties before your employer files the LCA with DOL.
What happens to my H-1B if the product line I was hired for gets cancelled?
If your employer terminates you, they're legally required to notify USCIS and offer to cover the cost of your return travel to your home country. You have a 60-day grace period to find a new employer and file an H-1B transfer petition. A layoff doesn't automatically invalidate your H-1B status during that window, but you can't work for any employer until the new petition is filed.
