Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding H-1B Visa Sponsorship in Power Systems Engineering
Verify your degree maps to SOC 17-2071
USCIS evaluates specialty occupation by matching your degree field to the role's SOC code. A degree in electrical engineering maps cleanly, but power engineering technology or physics degrees often require a credentials evaluation letter to close the gap.
Target utilities filing LCAs for grid projects
Search DOL's OFLC Wage Search for certified LCAs under SOC 17-2071 filtered by state. Utilities and engineering consultancies actively filing for transmission, substation, or renewable integration roles are your highest-probability sponsorship targets.
Use Migrate Mate to filter verified sponsors
Pull up Power Systems Engineering roles on Migrate Mate to see which employers have active H-1B filing history for this occupation. That filing history tells you who has already run the LCA and I-129 process for roles like yours.
Confirm your employer is E-Verify enrolled before accepting
H-1B cap-subject petitions require the employer to be registered with USCIS and, for certain roles at federal contractors, enrolled in E-Verify. Ask HR directly before your offer letter is drafted to avoid delays after acceptance.
Check O*NET job zone classification before interviews
Power systems engineering sits in O*NET Job Zone 4, requiring substantial preparation. Interviewers may ask about NERC reliability standards, load flow analysis, or protection coordination. Aligning your resume language to the O*NET task list strengthens both the interview and the specialty occupation argument in your petition.
Request premium processing if your start date is fixed
If you're joining a project with a hard mobilization date, ask your employer to file Form I-907 for premium processing. USCIS adjudicates within 15 business days under premium, compared to several months for standard processing.

Find Power Systems Engineering JobsPower Systems Engineering H-1B Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a power systems engineering role qualify as a specialty occupation for H-1B purposes?
Yes. Power systems engineering falls under SOC code 17-2071 and requires at minimum a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering or a directly related field. USCIS treats this as a specialty occupation because the theoretical and practical application of engineering principles is a normal entry requirement for the role, not just a preference.
Which types of employers sponsor H-1B visas for power systems engineers?
Investor-owned utilities, regional transmission organizations, independent power producers, and large engineering and procurement contractors are the most active H-1B sponsors for this occupation. Federal agencies sponsoring work on grid modernization or defense energy infrastructure may also file, though some positions require security clearances that complicate H-1B timing. You can find employers with verified H-1B filing history for this role on Migrate Mate.
How does the prevailing wage requirement affect power systems engineering H-1B filings?
Before your employer files the I-129 petition, it must obtain a certified Labor Condition Application from DOL certifying that your offered salary meets the prevailing wage for SOC 17-2071 in your work location. Wages are tiered by experience level, so an entry-level role in a high-cost metro carries a different wage floor than a senior role in a lower-cost region. You can look up applicable wage levels using the OFLC Wage Search.
Can a power systems engineer change employers mid-project without losing H-1B status?
Yes, through H-1B portability under AC21. If your new employer files an H-1B transfer petition before your current petition expires, you can start work with the new employer once USCIS receives the filing, without waiting for approval. The new employer must file a fresh LCA certified at the prevailing wage for the new work location, and the role must still qualify as a specialty occupation.
Does holding a Professional Engineer license strengthen an H-1B petition for power systems roles?
A PE license doesn't replace the degree requirement, but it does reinforce the specialty occupation argument, particularly for senior transmission planning or substation design roles where state licensure is standard. Employers filing for positions that normally require a PE in the job description benefit from including licensure documentation in the I-129 package, as it demonstrates industry-standard professional qualification for the offered role.
