Verify your degree meets specialty occupation
USCIS requires Practice Assistant roles to demand a specific bachelor's degree, not just any degree. Pull the O*NET profile for your exact job code and confirm the typical education requirement is a field-specific bachelor's before you apply.
Search LCA filings for healthcare employers
Use the OFLC Wage Search to find employers who have filed Labor Condition Applications for Practice Assistant or related healthcare support titles. Those filings confirm the employer already understands H-1B compliance, which reduces friction at the offer stage.
Time applications around the April cap filing window
H-1B cap petitions must be filed by April 1 for an October 1 start date. If you're negotiating an offer in late winter, confirm your prospective employer can complete the I-129 and LCA in time, or discuss cap-exempt facilities like hospitals and nonprofits.
Target cap-exempt healthcare organizations directly
Hospitals affiliated with research universities and nonprofit healthcare systems are exempt from the H-1B annual cap, meaning they can file year-round. Prioritize these employers if you need sponsorship outside the April lottery window.
Use Migrate Mate to find verified sponsoring employers
Filter your Practice Assistant job search on Migrate Mate to surface employers with confirmed H-1B LCA filing history in healthcare settings, so you're not spending time on applications at practices that have never sponsored a visa.
Clarify prevailing wage tier before accepting an offer
DOL prevailing wage determinations for Practice Assistants vary by geographic area and experience level. Ask the employer which wage level their LCA targets and confirm your offered salary meets or exceeds it, or USCIS may issue a Request for Evidence.
H-1B Visa Practice Assistant: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Practice Assistant role qualify as a specialty occupation for H-1B purposes?
It depends on how the employer defines the position. USCIS requires the job to normally demand a bachelor's degree in a specific field, not just any bachelor's degree. Practice Assistant roles tied to healthcare administration, clinical informatics, or allied health typically qualify, but generalist administrative support roles may not. Reviewing the O*NET profile for your specific job code helps confirm the education standard before you apply.
Which types of employers sponsor H-1B visas for Practice Assistants?
Hospital systems, multi-specialty outpatient clinics, academic medical centers, and large physician group practices are the most consistent H-1B sponsors for Practice Assistant roles. Academic medical centers and nonprofit hospitals are especially useful because they're cap-exempt, meaning they can file H-1B petitions year-round rather than only during the April lottery. You can browse verified sponsoring employers on Migrate Mate.
What documents should I prepare before an employer files my H-1B petition?
Your employer needs your official degree transcripts, credential evaluation if your degree is from outside the U.S., a detailed job description matching a specialty occupation, and evidence of any relevant licensure or certifications your state requires for the Practice Assistant role. Having a credential evaluation from a NACES-member organization ready before the offer stage speeds up the LCA filing and reduces back-and-forth with the employer's legal team.
How does the H-1B cap affect my job search timeline as a Practice Assistant?
Cap-subject H-1B petitions must be filed in early April for an October 1 start date, so a job offer finalized in January or February gives an employer enough lead time. If your preferred employer is cap-exempt, such as a nonprofit hospital or a research-affiliated medical group, you can start any time of year. Confirming the employer's cap status during the interview process prevents timeline surprises after an offer is extended.
Can my employer sponsor me for a green card after I'm on an H-1B as a Practice Assistant?
Yes. Many healthcare employers who sponsor H-1B visas for Practice Assistants also file PERM labor certification as a pathway to permanent residence, typically under the EB-2 or EB-3 employment-based categories. The timeline varies by your country of birth due to priority date backlogs, but starting PERM early in your H-1B period is standard practice at larger healthcare systems. Ask prospective employers whether they have an established immigration sponsorship policy for long-term staff.
