Map your degree to the SOC code
Principal Solutions Engineer roles often map to SOC code 15-1299 or 15-1251. Confirm your degree field aligns with the specific occupation USCIS will evaluate, since a mismatch between your credential and the SOC code is a common RFE trigger.
Pull prevailing wage data before negotiating
Use the OFLC Wage Search to look up Level III and Level IV wages for your target metro area before you enter salary discussions. Your offer must meet or exceed the DOL prevailing wage the employer certifies on the LCA.
Target employers with cap-exempt affiliations
Some enterprise software and research-adjacent firms have affiliations with universities or nonprofits that qualify them as cap-exempt filers. A cap-exempt employer can file your H-1B petition any time of year, bypassing the April lottery entirely.
Search verified H-1B sponsors on Migrate Mate
Filter Principal Solutions Engineer roles by employers with documented H-1B LCA filing history using Migrate Mate. This narrows your search to companies that have already navigated the sponsorship process for this specific occupation code.
Clarify the specialty occupation case before accepting
Ask the recruiter whether a bachelor's degree in a specific technical field is listed as a minimum requirement in the job description, not just preferred. USCIS will scrutinize the job posting itself when evaluating specialty occupation status for solutions engineering roles.
Time your start date around premium processing
If your employer files after April 1 for an October 1 start, standard processing can run several months. Confirm whether your employer will use USCIS premium processing so you and your manager can plan onboarding and project assignments without ambiguity.
H-1B Visa Principal Solutions Engineer: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Principal Solutions Engineer role qualify as a specialty occupation for H-1B purposes?
It depends on how the job description is written. USCIS requires the role to mandate a bachelor's degree or higher in a specific field as a minimum requirement, not just a preference. Principal Solutions Engineer positions that require a computer science, engineering, or information systems degree typically qualify, but broadly worded postings that accept any bachelor's degree can draw an RFE. The O*NET profile for this occupation supports specialty occupation status when the technical requirements are clearly documented.
Which industries sponsor H-1B visas most often for this role?
Cloud infrastructure, enterprise SaaS, cybersecurity, and networking hardware companies are the most active H-1B sponsors for Principal Solutions Engineer titles, based on DOL LCA disclosure data. These employers regularly certify LCAs for senior-level technical sales and implementation roles. You can browse employers with verified H-1B filing history for this occupation on Migrate Mate.
Can I transfer my H-1B to a new employer if I change solutions engineering roles?
Yes. Under H-1B portability rules, you can start working for a new employer as soon as your transfer petition is filed, without waiting for approval, as long as your previous H-1B was approved and you've maintained valid status. Your new employer files a new I-129 petition and LCA reflecting the updated role, title, and worksite. If the role or location changes materially, an amended petition may also be required.
How does remote or multi-site work affect my H-1B as a solutions engineer?
Solutions engineers often work across multiple client sites or from home, which creates LCA compliance obligations. Your employer must file a new LCA or an amended H-1B petition if you're working at a location not covered by the original filing. Short-term placements under 60 days may qualify for a short-term placement exception, but sustained remote work in a different metro area requires a new LCA certified at the prevailing wage for that location.
What documentation should I gather before my employer starts the H-1B filing?
Provide your employer with your transcripts, degree certificates, and any credential evaluations if your degree is from outside the U.S. A degree evaluation confirming equivalency to a U.S. bachelor's in a relevant technical field is especially important for three-year international degrees. Also prepare a detailed description of your day-to-day duties, since USCIS will assess whether the actual work performed requires a specific technical degree, not just the job title.
