Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding H-1B Visa Sponsorship as a Professional Services Consultant
Verify your degree aligns with the role
USCIS requires a direct relationship between your degree field and the consulting specialty. A business or management degree typically supports a generalist consulting role, but technical consulting positions may require an engineering or computer science credential to pass the specialty occupation review.
Search LCA filings by occupation code
Use the OFLC Wage Search to filter Labor Condition Application filings under SOC code 13-1160 for management consultants. Employers who filed LCAs in the past two fiscal years are actively sponsoring H-1B workers and are far more likely to repeat the process for your offer.
Target employers who are E-Verify enrolled
Consulting firms that hire international staff on work authorization almost always carry E-Verify enrollment. Prioritize those employers when applying, since USCIS processing and onboarding paperwork move faster when the employer already has an active compliance infrastructure in place.
Use Migrate Mate to filter verified sponsors
Pull up Professional Services Consultant roles on Migrate Mate to see which employers have verified H-1B filing histories. Filtering by DOL LCA data before applying saves you from pursuing roles where sponsorship is theoretically possible but has never actually happened.
Clarify billable project structure before filing
Consulting roles that place you at client sites trigger USCIS scrutiny around employer-employee control. Confirm your offer letter specifies your direct employer as the petitioner and includes project assignments, since an ambiguous staffing arrangement can result in a Request for Evidence before the cap-subject petition even clears.
Time your offer to the April cap window
H-1B petitions for cap-subject employers must be filed in April for an October 1 start date. If your offer comes in June, negotiate a delayed start or request that your employer file as cap-exempt if they qualify, so you aren't waiting a full additional year in lottery registration.
H-1B Visa Professional Services Consultant: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Professional Services Consultant role qualify as a specialty occupation for H-1B purposes?
It depends on how the role is defined. USCIS requires that the position normally requires at least a bachelor's degree in a specific, directly related field. Generic consulting titles sometimes draw Requests for Evidence because the job duties can be performed with degrees from multiple unrelated fields. A well-drafted job description that ties the duties to a particular discipline, such as information systems, business analytics, or organizational management, strengthens the specialty occupation argument significantly.
Which employers commonly sponsor H-1B visas for Professional Services Consultants?
Enterprise software vendors, Big Four accounting and advisory firms, and IT services companies with large consulting practices file the highest volumes of H-1B petitions for consulting roles. You can verify an employer's actual filing history by checking DOL LCA disclosure data before applying. Migrate Mate surfaces this information directly on each job listing, so you can confirm sponsorship activity without manually searching government databases.
How does client site placement affect my H-1B petition as a consultant?
USCIS applies heightened scrutiny to consulting roles where work is performed at third-party client locations rather than the petitioner's own facilities. The employer must demonstrate it retains day-to-day control over your work. Petitions that lack specific client project details or that describe open-ended staffing arrangements often receive Requests for Evidence. Asking your employer to include project scope, supervision structure, and expected client assignments in the supporting documentation reduces that risk.
Can I change consulting employers while on H-1B status?
Yes. H-1B portability allows you to start working for a new employer once that employer files a new H-1B petition on your behalf, as long as your prior status was lawful and the petition is filed before your authorized stay expires. For consulting roles, the new employer must file a fresh petition reflecting the new position's duties, wage level, and work location, and must obtain a new Labor Condition Application from DOL before filing with USCIS.
What prevailing wage level should I expect for a Professional Services Consultant H-1B petition?
DOL assigns prevailing wages across four levels based on experience, complexity, and supervisory responsibility. Entry-level consulting roles typically fall at Level I or II, while senior client-facing or practice-lead positions may be classified at Level III or IV. Your employer must pay at least the prevailing wage for the designated level and work location. You can look up current wage levels for this occupation using the OFLC Wage Search before negotiations to understand what the employer is legally required to pay.
