Frame your degree against LCA job duties
Your H-1B petition lives or dies on the degree-to-role match. Map your marketing or communications degree directly to the specific promotional duties in the job description before your employer files the LCA with DOL.
Target employers with cap-exempt status
Universities, nonprofits affiliated with universities, and certain research institutions are cap-exempt, meaning your employer can file year-round without entering the March lottery. Promotions Manager roles exist at these organizations, and your start date isn't tied to October 1.
Use Migrate Mate to filter verified sponsors
Search Promotions Manager roles on Migrate Mate to see employers with confirmed H-1B LCA filing history for this occupation code, so you're targeting companies that have already cleared the DOL process for this role type.
Request premium processing before your offer expires
Standard USCIS processing can run several months. Ask your employer to upgrade to premium processing so USCIS adjudicates the I-129 within 15 business days, giving you a firm timeline before your OPT or current status expires.
Verify your role's prevailing wage tier early
Look up the Promotions Manager SOC code in the OFLC Wage Search before negotiations start. Your offered salary must meet the Level 1 through Level 4 prevailing wage for your metro area, and some employers won't adjust an offer after it's made.
Build a portfolio showing measurable campaign results
Promotions Manager RFEs often challenge specialty occupation status. Quantified outcomes tied to a specific degree discipline, such as attribution modeling or consumer behavior analysis, strengthen the employer's I-129 evidence package against a USCIS specialty occupation challenge.
H-1B Visa Promotions Manager: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Promotions Manager role qualify as a specialty occupation for H-1B purposes?
Yes, provided the position genuinely requires at least a bachelor's degree in a specific field such as marketing, advertising, communications, or business. The employer must demonstrate in the I-129 petition that the degree is a normal minimum for entry into the role. Generic management duties without a field-specific requirement can draw an RFE from USCIS, so the job description needs to spell out the theoretical and practical knowledge that only a degree in that discipline provides.
Which employers sponsor H-1B visas for Promotions Manager positions?
Consumer goods companies, entertainment studios, media agencies, and large retailers have consistent LCA filing history for promotional and marketing management roles. You can browse employers with verified H-1B filing records for this occupation on Migrate Mate, which surfaces DOL Labor Condition Application data so you're targeting companies that have already completed the sponsorship process for comparable roles.
What happens to my H-1B status if my employer changes my title from Promotions Manager to a different role?
A material change in job duties, title, or work location typically requires the employer to file an amended I-129 with USCIS before the change takes effect. If the new role has substantially different duties or a different SOC code, a new LCA must be filed with DOL first. Working under a materially changed role without an amended petition can put your status at risk.
Can I transfer my H-1B to a new Promotions Manager job at a different company?
Yes. Under H-1B portability, you can start working for a new employer as soon as they file a new I-129 petition on your behalf, as long as your previous H-1B was approved and you've maintained valid status. You don't need to wait for the new petition to be approved before your first day, provided your prior employer's petition was properly filed and you weren't out of status.
How does the H-1B lottery affect my job search timeline as a Promotions Manager candidate?
Cap-subject H-1B registrations open each March, and USCIS conducts the lottery shortly after. Selected petitions can have an earliest start date of October 1, so if you need sponsorship and aren't currently in a cap-exempt situation, your employment can't begin until that fiscal year starts. Targeting cap-exempt employers or companies willing to sponsor a change of status from a cap-exempt visa can bypass this constraint entirely.
