Verify your degree matches the role
USCIS requires a direct relationship between your degree field and the Quality Inspector position. An engineering or quality management degree works. A general business degree typically doesn't, even with years of inspection experience.
Check LCA filings by industry sector
Aerospace, automotive, and medical device manufacturers file the most LCAs for Quality Inspector roles. Search the OFLC Wage Search by SOC code 51-9061 to identify which employers have certified wages in your target metro area.
Use Migrate Mate to filter sponsoring employers
Filter your Quality Inspector job search on Migrate Mate by verified H-1B filing history so you only apply to employers who have sponsored this role before, saving time on applications that won't convert.
Get your credentials evaluated before applying
If your engineering degree is from outside the U.S., obtain a credential evaluation showing equivalency to a U.S. bachelor's degree before you apply. Employers and USCIS both need this documentation to support the specialty occupation determination.
Ask about prevailing wage level during negotiation
Your employer's LCA must certify a wage at or above the prevailing wage for your location and SOC code. Ask which wage level they're filing at. Level I wages reflect entry-level roles and may not match your experience, affecting your offer.
Confirm your employer files before the April deadline
H-1B petitions for the annual cap must be registered in March and filed by April 1 for an October 1 start date. If your offer comes in late spring, negotiate a deferred start or explore cap-exempt employers like government contractors or nonprofits.
H-1B Visa Quality Inspector: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Quality Inspector role qualify as a specialty occupation for H-1B purposes?
It depends on how the employer defines the position. USCIS requires the role to normally require at least a bachelor's degree in a specific field like industrial engineering, quality management, or materials science. Roles that accept any degree or substitute experience for education may not qualify. Employers in aerospace, medical devices, and semiconductor manufacturing typically structure Quality Inspector job descriptions to meet the specialty occupation standard.
Which industries sponsor H-1B visas most often for Quality Inspector jobs?
Aerospace and defense, medical device manufacturing, automotive suppliers, and semiconductor fabrication are the sectors with the highest H-1B LCA filings for Quality Inspector roles. These industries operate under strict regulatory frameworks like FAA, FDA, and ISO standards, which drive demand for degreed inspectors and justify H-1B sponsorship. You can search verified H-1B filing history by employer on Migrate Mate to narrow your list.
What SOC code covers Quality Inspector roles for LCA and prevailing wage purposes?
Most Quality Inspector positions fall under SOC code 51-9061, which covers Inspectors, Testers, Sorters, Samplers, and Weighers. Some employers file under 17-2112 (Industrial Engineers) if the role has a stronger engineering component. The SOC code determines which prevailing wage USCIS and DOL will apply, so confirm with your employer which code they plan to use before the LCA is filed.
Can I use my OPT STEM extension to work as a Quality Inspector while waiting for H-1B approval?
Yes, if your employer is enrolled in E-Verify and your role falls under a STEM-designated CIP code matching your degree. Quality and reliability engineering degrees commonly qualify. Your STEM OPT extension gives you up to 24 additional months of work authorization, which covers the H-1B cap-gap period and the October 1 start date if you're selected in the lottery.
What documentation should I prepare to support an H-1B petition for a Quality Inspector position?
Prepare official transcripts and a credential evaluation if your degree is foreign, professional certifications like ASQ CQI or CQE, and a detailed employment letter explaining how your degree directly applies to the inspection duties. Your employer will need to show through the LCA that the role requires a specific technical degree. The stronger the connection between your credentials and the job description, the cleaner the USCIS adjudication.
