Verify your CCC credential before applying
Most H-1B sponsors for SLP roles require your Certificate of Clinical Competence from ASHA. Confirm your CCC is current before submitting applications, as employers use it to satisfy the specialty occupation requirement in the LCA.
Target healthcare systems over school districts
Hospital networks and rehabilitation companies file H-1B petitions through dedicated immigration counsel more consistently than public school districts, which often lack the infrastructure to sponsor foreign nationals for clinical roles.
Search employer LCA filings on Migrate Mate
Pull DOL Labor Condition Application data on Migrate Mate to see which employers have filed for SLP roles by SOC code. This shows real sponsorship history, not just a recruiter's claim that a company 'sometimes sponsors.'
Check state licensure timelines before accepting offers
H-1B petitions require a state license or a temporary practice permit in many states. Some states take 60 to 90 days to issue SLP licenses, so confirm the timeline before your employer sets a start date and files with USCIS.
Use OFLC Wage Search to negotiate your offered salary
Your employer must pay at least the prevailing wage for your SOC code and work location, certified in the LCA. Run the OFLC Wage Search before your offer stage so you know what wage level the DOL will require.
Request premium processing if your start date is fixed
Premium processing reduces I-129 adjudication to 15 business days. If your employer has a hard credentialing or caseload start date, ask them to file with premium processing to avoid gaps between your OPT or prior status expiring and your H-1B approval.
H-1B Visa Speech Language Pathology: Frequently Asked Questions
Does speech-language pathology qualify as a specialty occupation for H-1B purposes?
Yes. USCIS recognizes SLP as a specialty occupation because the role requires at minimum a master's degree in communication sciences and disorders for clinical practice in most states, and a bachelor's degree at minimum by statute. Your CCC from ASHA and your state license together document the theoretical and practical requirements USCIS expects to see in an H-1B petition.
Which types of employers most commonly sponsor H-1B visas for SLPs?
Hospital systems, inpatient rehabilitation facilities, skilled nursing facility chains, and private practice networks with multi-state operations are the most consistent H-1B sponsors for SLPs. School districts can sponsor H-1B visas but frequently lack in-house immigration infrastructure, which slows or blocks filings. Use Migrate Mate to filter for employers with verified LCA filing history in speech-language pathology before you apply.
Can my employer sponsor my H-1B if I still need to obtain state licensure?
Yes, in most cases. Many states allow SLPs to practice under a temporary or provisional license while a full license is pending. Your employer can file the H-1B petition before your permanent license is issued, but the petition must reflect the license you hold or are eligible to hold at the time of filing. Confirm your specific state's temporary practice rules before your employer submits the I-129.
How does the H-1B prevailing wage requirement apply to SLP roles?
Before filing your H-1B petition, your employer must certify a Labor Condition Application with the DOL confirming you'll be paid at least the prevailing wage for your SLP role in the specific work location. The DOL assigns wage levels 1 through 4 based on experience and specialization. You can check applicable wage levels using the OFLC Wage Search to understand what your employer is required to pay before you finalize an offer.
Is my SLP master's degree from a foreign university accepted for H-1B sponsorship?
It can be, but your employer's immigration attorney will typically require a credential evaluation from a recognized service confirming your degree is equivalent to a U.S. master's in communication sciences and disorders. ASHA's certification process itself often includes this review, so if you already hold CCC, you've cleared a significant part of the equivalency burden. USCIS still reviews the evaluation independently as part of the specialty occupation analysis.
