Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding H-1B Visa Sponsorship as a Technical Sales Specialist
Verify your role meets specialty occupation
USCIS requires your Technical Sales Specialist position to mandate a specific bachelor's degree, not just prefer one. Pull the O*NET profile for your SOC code to confirm the degree requirement language before accepting an offer.
Target employers with active LCA filings
Use Migrate Mate to filter Technical Sales Specialist roles by verified DOL Labor Condition Application history, so you're applying to employers who've already navigated H-1B sponsorship for this job title, not ones figuring it out alongside you.
Document your technical expertise precisely
Your resume and supporting letters need to tie your sales function to a specific technical discipline. A cover letter describing you as a 'sales professional' isn't enough. Name the technology, system, or product category and your degree-level knowledge of it.
Ask about prevailing wage tier before negotiating
The DOL assigns a wage level to your LCA filing. Level I locks you into entry rates; Level II or III gives more negotiating room. Run your job title and location through the OFLC Wage Search before your compensation conversation.
Confirm the employer's E-Verify enrollment status
H-1B employers must be E-Verify participants. Ask HR directly during the offer stage. If they aren't enrolled, they can't file your petition, and you'll lose time in a lottery cycle you can't get back.
Plan around the cap-subject filing window
H-1B registration opens in March for an October 1 start date. Technical Sales roles at for-profit companies are cap-subject, so your offer letter needs to be in place before registration closes. Start targeting employers no later than January.
H-1B Visa Technical Sales Specialist: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Technical Sales Specialist role qualify as an H-1B specialty occupation?
It depends on how the employer defines the position. If the job description requires a specific bachelor's degree in engineering, computer science, chemistry, or a related technical field, it qualifies. Roles framed as general sales with a technical preference often fail USCIS review. The job posting and internal documentation both need to reflect a degree requirement, not a preference.
Which industries sponsor H-1B visas most often for Technical Sales Specialists?
Software and SaaS companies, semiconductor manufacturers, industrial automation firms, medical device companies, and scientific instrumentation providers are consistent H-1B sponsors for this role. The technical complexity of the product directly affects how easy it is for an employer to justify specialty occupation status. You can browse employers with verified H-1B filing history for this role on Migrate Mate.
Can my employer file my H-1B petition while I'm on OPT?
Yes. If your OPT is valid through October 1 of the target year, your employer can register you in the March lottery and file the petition if selected. If your OPT expires before October 1, cap-gap protection extends your work authorization automatically once the petition is filed, as long as your F-1 status was valid when the petition was submitted.
What happens to my H-1B if I change roles within the same company?
A material change in job duties, location, or wage level requires an amended H-1B petition and a new LCA. Moving from a Technical Sales Specialist to an account management or business development role could require demonstrating that the new position still qualifies as a specialty occupation. Confirm with your employer's immigration counsel before accepting an internal transfer.
How does the prevailing wage requirement affect Technical Sales Specialist H-1B filings?
DOL requires your employer to pay at least the prevailing wage for your job title, level, and work location as determined by the OFLC Wage Search. Technical Sales roles in high-cost metro areas carry higher prevailing wages than the same title in smaller markets. Employers who underpay relative to the LCA wage level face DOL audit risk, which can affect your petition's approval.
