Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding H-1B Visa Sponsorship as a Transition Specialist
Verify your degree meets specialty occupation
USCIS requires your degree field to directly relate to transition services work. A counseling, social work, or rehabilitation sciences degree strengthens your petition. A general business degree alone may trigger an RFE, so gather transcripts showing relevant coursework.
Target state vocational rehabilitation contractors
State agencies that contract out transition services to nonprofits and private providers file H-1B petitions more regularly than you'd expect. Search by SOC code 21-1015 in the OFLC Wage Search to see which employers have active Labor Condition Applications for this role.
Use Migrate Mate to filter verified sponsors
Pull up Transition Specialist listings on Migrate Mate to see employers with confirmed H-1B LCA filing history for this occupation. That filters out postings where sponsorship is theoretical rather than practiced.
Request cap-exempt filing through eligible employers
Nonprofits affiliated with universities or government research institutions qualify as cap-exempt H-1B employers, letting your petition skip the annual lottery entirely. Ask prospective employers directly whether they hold cap-exempt status before accepting an offer.
Benchmark your offered wage against the LCA prevailing rate
Before signing an offer, cross-check your salary against Level I and Level II wages for SOC 21-1015 in your metro area using the OFLC Wage Search. DOL will reject the LCA if your offered wage falls below the certified prevailing wage.
Time your offer acceptance around premium processing
USCIS offers 15-business-day premium processing for H-1B petitions. If your start date is within three months of the offer, ask your employer upfront whether they'll use it. A delayed filing decision can push your start date past the October 1 cap-subject window.

Find Transition Specialist JobsTransition Specialist H-1B Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Transition Specialist role qualify as a specialty occupation for H-1B purposes?
Yes, if the employer's job description requires at least a bachelor's degree in counseling, social work, rehabilitation sciences, or a directly related field. USCIS evaluates the degree requirement attached to the specific position, not the broader job category. Roles where a general degree is accepted across all fields are more likely to face an RFE on specialty occupation grounds.
Which types of employers sponsor H-1B visas for Transition Specialists?
Workforce development organizations, state vocational rehabilitation contractors, school districts, nonprofits serving adults with disabilities, and behavioral health agencies are the most active sponsors for this role. You can find employers with verified H-1B LCA filing history for Transition Specialist positions on Migrate Mate, which filters by occupation and filing record.
Can I transfer my H-1B to a new Transition Specialist employer mid-status?
Yes. H-1B portability allows you to start working for a new employer as soon as the transfer petition is filed with USCIS, as long as you're in valid H-1B status and your previous employer filed in good faith. The new employer must file a new I-129 and Labor Condition Application before your first day.
What happens to my H-1B status if my Transition Specialist contract ends early?
You have a 60-day grace period from your last day of employment to find a new sponsor, change status, or depart the U.S. During that window you can't work, but you can interview and have a new H-1B transfer petition filed on your behalf. Missing the 60-day window puts you out of status, so start the job search before the contract ends.
How does the H-1B prevailing wage requirement affect Transition Specialist offers?
DOL requires your employer to pay at least the prevailing wage for your occupation and work location before it will certify the Labor Condition Application. The prevailing wage for Transition Specialists varies by metro area and experience level. You can verify the applicable wage tier for your location using the OFLC Wage Search before evaluating any offer.
