Match your degree to the role
H-1B1 visa requires a specialty occupation, meaning your degree field must directly relate to events work. A hospitality management, communications, or marketing degree strengthens your case. A general business degree alone may draw scrutiny from the consulate officer.
Verify the LCA wage before negotiating
Your employer files a Labor Condition Application certifying your offered salary meets the DOL prevailing wage for your specific role and metro area. Run the OFLC Wage Search before your offer letter is finalized so you know the floor going in.
Target employers already filing H-1B1 LCAs
Use Migrate Mate to filter for employers with H-1B1 Chile LCA filing history in events, hospitality, and conference management. These companies have already navigated the process and won't need internal legal sign-off before agreeing to sponsor you.
Prepare your credential documentation early
Chilean university transcripts often need a certified English translation and, for consulate review, a credential evaluation confirming equivalency to a U.S. bachelor's degree. Get this done before you accept an offer, not after.
Ask the employer about E-Verify enrollment upfront
H-1B1 visa employers must be E-Verify participants. Smaller event agencies and boutique production companies sometimes aren't. Confirm enrollment status before investing time in the interview process to avoid a last-minute deal-breaker.
Extend status before your two-year period expires
H-1B1 Chile is granted in two-year increments with no maximum renewal limit, but you must extend before the current period ends. Your employer files a new LCA for each extension, and the consulate appointment must be completed before your current status lapses.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does an events role qualify as a specialty occupation for H-1B1 Chile?
Yes, if the position genuinely requires a bachelor's degree in a directly related field such as hospitality management, event management, communications, or marketing. Roles like event coordinator, conference producer, or venue operations manager typically qualify. A general coordinator role with no degree requirement in the job description is harder to support at the consulate.
How does H-1B1 Chile compare to H-1B for events professionals?
H-1B1 Chile has no lottery, no USCIS petition, and an annual cap of 1,400 that almost never fills, making it far more predictable than H-1B visa. The trade-off is that H-1B1 doesn't allow dual intent, so you can't use it as a direct pathway to a green card. For Chilean events professionals focused on building a U.S. career now, H-1B1 is the faster and more reliable entry point.
How do I find U.S. employers willing to sponsor H-1B1 Chile for events roles?
Migrate Mate lets you search for employers with verified H-1B1 Chile LCA filing history filtered by occupation and location. This saves you from pitching sponsorship cold to employers who have never filed before. Convention centers, hotel groups, marketing agencies, and experiential production firms are the most active sponsors in this space.
Can I switch events employers after entering the U.S. on H-1B1 Chile?
Yes, but your new employer must file a fresh LCA and you must return to a U.S. consulate for a new visa stamp before starting work. Unlike H-1B, H-1B1 visa doesn't allow portability, meaning you can't begin work for the new employer while the filing is pending. Plan the transition timeline with your employer accordingly.
What happens if my events project ends before my H-1B1 Chile period expires?
H-1B1 visa status is tied to your specific employer and role. If your employment ends, you have a short grace period before your status lapses. You can't simply transfer to a new event employer without returning to the consulate. If you're working project-to-project, confirm your employer will maintain active LCA coverage across gaps between events.
