INTRODUCTION
Google's custom-designed machines make up one of the largest and most powerful computing infrastructures in the world. The Hardware Testing Engineering team ensures that this cutting-edge equipment is reliable. In the R&D lab, you design test equipment for prototypes of our machinery and develop the protocols used to scale these tests for the entire global team. Working closely with design engineers, you give input on designs to improve our hardware until you're sure it meets Google's standards of quality and reliability.
With your technical expertise, you create test plans for highly complex platforms (e.g., validating the interaction of multiple pieces of equipment at the networking and subsystem levels), and using your deep knowledge of component design characteristics, you diagnose highly complex hardware or software issues.
In this role, you will join the team responsible for setting and managing the quality and reliability standards for our Tape Storage (including tape drives, media, and library automation) across Google. You are a Quality and Reliability expert with a track record of improving the quality of Tape storage systems during new product introduction (NPI) and maintaining it throughout its life cycle. You will have extensive involvement in the tools, processes and technologies used to assess tape drive mechanics, magnetic tape media, and robotic library automation quality and reliability. You will have excellent partner collaboration skills to sift through data and use it to drive design or manufacturing process improvements.
Individual pay is determined by factors including job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training.

Verify your degree field matches the role
H-1B1 Chile requires a specialty occupation, meaning your engineering degree must directly relate to supplier quality work. A general business or management degree won't satisfy the requirement, even if you've held quality engineering titles for years.
Research employer LCA filing history on Migrate Mate
Search Migrate Mate to identify U.S. employers with verified H-1B1 Chile LCA filing history for engineering roles. This filters out companies that are unfamiliar with the visa category before you spend time applying.
Target manufacturers with active supplier networks
Aerospace, automotive, and medical device manufacturers rely heavily on supplier quality engineers and tend to have established immigration processes. Focus your search on companies with ISO or AS9100 certified supply chains, where your role is operationally essential.
Get your LCA prevailing wage tier confirmed early
Use the OFLC Wage Search to look up prevailing wages for your SOC code and work location before negotiations. H-1B1 Chile requires the employer to certify your offered wage meets DOL standards, so knowing the floor before the offer prevents delays.
Prepare quality credentials that translate for U.S. employers
Certifications like CQE from ASQ or IATF 16949 auditor credentials carry direct weight with U.S. manufacturing employers evaluating Chilean candidates. Document your experience with PPAP, APQP, or FMEA processes in English on your resume before applying.
Confirm your employer understands the consular process
Unlike H-1B visa, H-1B1 Chile skips USCIS petition filing entirely. Once your employer files the certified LCA with DOL, you apply directly at the U.S. consulate in Santiago. Employers unfamiliar with this process may incorrectly assume a USCIS filing is required.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Supplier Quality Engineer role qualify as a specialty occupation for H-1B1 Chile?
Yes, supplier quality engineering qualifies as a specialty occupation because the role typically requires at least a bachelor's degree in engineering, quality management, or a closely related field. The employer confirms this in the Labor Condition Application. Roles where a general degree in any field is accepted may not satisfy the requirement, so the job description needs to specify a relevant degree field.
How does the H-1B1 Chile visa differ from H-1B for this role?
H-1B1 Chile has no lottery and no USCIS petition filing requirement, which means your employer doesn't pay I-129 petition fees and you're not subject to the April lottery. The annual cap of 1,400 visas for Chilean nationals has never been exhausted. The tradeoff is that H-1B1 Chile doesn't allow dual intent, so you can't pursue a green card while on this status without additional steps.
How do I find U.S. employers that sponsor H-1B1 Chile visas for quality engineering roles?
Use Migrate Mate to search for employers with verified H-1B1 Chile LCA filing history filtered by occupation. This is more reliable than applying broadly, since many manufacturers are unfamiliar with the H-1B1 Chile category and default to assuming only H-1B is available. Targeting employers who have filed before shortens the sponsorship conversation significantly.
Can I change employers while on H-1B1 Chile status?
Yes, but the process starts over with the new employer. Your new employer must file a fresh LCA with DOL and have it certified before you begin work. There is no portability provision like H-1B portability under AC21, so you cannot start the new job while the application is pending. Plan your transition timeline with your employer accordingly.
What documents should I prepare before approaching employers about H-1B1 Chile sponsorship?
Prepare your engineering degree transcripts with an official English translation, your credential evaluation if your degree is from a Chilean university, and documentation of any relevant certifications such as CQE or IATF auditor credentials. Employers will need these to confirm specialty occupation eligibility before initiating the LCA filing with DOL.
