Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding Visa Sponsorship as a Firmware Engineer
Verify your degree aligns with firmware roles
Firmware Engineering is classified as a specialty occupation requiring a directly related bachelor's degree. Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or Computer Science typically satisfy this. If your Chilean degree is in a broader field, prepare a credential evaluation that maps coursework to embedded systems.
Target employers with active LCA filing history
Search the OFLC Wage Search to confirm a company has filed Labor Condition Applications for firmware or embedded software roles. Employers who have done it before understand the H-1B1 Chile consular process and won't treat your sponsorship request as an obstacle.
Use Migrate Mate to find verified sponsoring employers
Migrate Mate filters job listings by verified H-1B1 Chile sponsorship history, so you're applying to companies that have actually filed for this visa type. That cuts the time you'd otherwise spend cold-pitching employers unfamiliar with the Chile-specific consular route.
Confirm the prevailing wage tier before negotiating
Your employer must certify your salary meets DOL prevailing wage standards for your specific SOC code and work location. Pull the wage level for firmware roles in your target metro using the OFLC Wage Search before your offer call so you can flag underpayment early.
Prepare your portfolio around hardware-software integration
Consular officers evaluate whether your role genuinely requires a specialized degree. Bring documentation of firmware projects, RTOS work, or bare-metal driver development that demonstrates the technical depth a generalist without an engineering degree couldn't replicate.
Understand the one-year renewal cycle for H-1B1 Chile
Unlike H-1B, the H-1B1 Chile visa renews annually and doesn't confer dual intent. If your employer's LCA or I-129 filing is delayed at renewal, you lose work authorization. Confirm your employer knows to initiate the process at least 60 days before your current status expires.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Firmware Engineer qualify as a specialty occupation for H-1B1 Chile?
Yes. Firmware Engineering requires at least a bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a closely related field, which meets the specialty occupation definition under the H-1B1 Chile visa. USCIS evaluates whether the role inherently requires that specific degree, so job duties involving embedded systems, microcontroller programming, or hardware abstraction layers strengthen the qualification case.
How is the H-1B1 Chile visa different from H-1B for Firmware Engineers?
H-1B requires entering a randomized lottery with roughly one-in-four selection odds. H-1B1 Chile has no lottery, a dedicated 1,400-visa annual cap that has never been exhausted, and is adjudicated at the U.S. consulate in Santiago rather than by USCIS. The tradeoff is that H-1B1 Chile doesn't allow dual intent and renews annually instead of in three-year increments.
Where can I find Firmware Engineer jobs with H-1B1 Chile sponsorship?
Migrate Mate is the recommended starting point. It filters listings by verified H-1B1 Chile LCA filing history, which means you're targeting employers who have already navigated this specific visa type for technical roles. Generic job boards don't distinguish between employers willing to sponsor H-1B1 Chile versus only H-1B or no sponsorship at all.
What documentation should I bring to my H-1B1 Chile consular interview as a Firmware Engineer?
Bring your certified LCA, the approved I-129 petition, your offer letter specifying the firmware role and salary, degree transcripts and diploma, and any credential evaluation if your degree title differs from a standard U.S. engineering program. Technical documentation showing project scope, such as firmware architecture diagrams or published patents, supports the specialty occupation assessment.
Can I change Firmware Engineer jobs while on H-1B1 Chile status?
Yes, but you must restart the sponsorship process with the new employer. Your current H-1B1 Chile authorization is tied to the specific employer named in the LCA and I-129. The new employer files a fresh LCA with DOL and a new I-129 petition before you begin work. There's no H-1B-style portability provision, so timing the transition carefully is essential to avoid a status gap.
