Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding Visa Sponsorship as a Systems Development Engineer
Align your degree to the SOC code
Systems development engineering roles file under specific Standard Occupational Classification codes. Pull the O*NET profile for your target role and confirm your Chilean degree field maps directly to it before applying. Mismatches trigger employer hesitation before they ever reach the H-1B1 visa paperwork stage.
Verify prevailing wage before salary negotiations
Run the OFLC Wage Search for your target job title and the employer's metro area before you get an offer. If the posted salary falls below Level I or II, the employer's LCA will fail DOL certification and sponsorship collapses at the filing stage.
Target employers already filing LCAs for engineering roles
Use Migrate Mate to filter companies by verified H-1B1 Chile LCA filing history in systems and software engineering. Employers who have filed before understand the consulate-direct process and won't stall on sponsorship because the visa type is unfamiliar to their HR team.
Request a detailed offer letter before the DS-160
Your DS-160 nonimmigrant visa application requires specific employment details, including your exact title, start date, and work location. Ask your employer to confirm these in writing before you begin the form. Discrepancies between your offer letter and DS-160 responses are a common cause of consulate delays.
Confirm the employer will certify the LCA before you resign
The H-1B1 Chile process requires DOL to certify your Labor Condition Application before your consulate appointment. Ask your prospective employer whether their legal team has confirmed the LCA timeline. Don't give notice at your current job until LCA certification is in hand.
Get your Chilean credentials evaluated for U.S. equivalency
Chilean engineering degrees typically run five years, but U.S. consular officers assess them against a four-year U.S. bachelor's standard. A credential evaluation from a NACES-member organization that explicitly confirms bachelor's-level equivalency removes one of the most common specialty occupation objections at the interview.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Systems Development Engineer role qualify as a specialty occupation under the H-1B1 Chile visa?
Yes. Systems development engineering requires at least a bachelor's degree in computer science, software engineering, or a closely related field, which meets the specialty occupation definition for H-1B1 Chile purposes. The consular officer will assess whether your specific degree field aligns with your job duties, so the closer that match, the stronger your case.
How does the H-1B1 Chile visa differ from the H-1B for Systems Development Engineer roles?
The H-1B1 Chile visa skips the H-1B lottery entirely and processes directly at the consulate. The annual cap of 1,400 has never been exhausted, so there's no waiting for a selection result. The trade-off is that H-1B visa1 Chile does not authorize dual intent, meaning you can't simultaneously pursue a green card while on this status without careful planning.
Which employers are most likely to sponsor the H-1B1 Chile visa for engineering roles?
Migrate Mate filters job listings by verified H-1B1 Chile LCA filing history, so you can identify companies that have already sponsored Chilean engineers rather than cold-applying and hoping HR is familiar with the visa type. Employers in cloud infrastructure, software platforms, and enterprise systems tend to have the most active filing history for systems development roles.
Can I start working in the U.S. while my H-1B1 Chile application is pending?
No. The H-1B1 Chile visa is processed at the consulate abroad, not through a USCIS change-of-status petition. You must receive your visa stamp before entering the U.S. to begin work. There is no cap-gap or receipt-notice authorization period equivalent available under this visa category.
How long does H-1B1 Chile visa sponsorship take for a Systems Development Engineer offer?
Once your employer certifies the Labor Condition Application with DOL and you complete the DS-160, most consulates in Chile schedule H-1B1 visa interviews within a few weeks. Total time from signed offer to visa stamp typically runs four to eight weeks for straightforward cases, though administrative processing can extend that window if additional review is triggered.
