Verify your degree field matches the role
H-1B1 visa requires a degree in a directly related field, not just any bachelor's. A computer science or software engineering degree maps cleanly, but an unrelated major paired with years of experience won't satisfy the specialty occupation standard on its own.
Search LCA filings before targeting employers
Use the OFLC Wage Search to see which companies have filed Labor Condition Applications for Lead Software Engineer roles. Employers with recent LCA history are already set up to sponsor H-1B1 visas, which shortens your negotiation and avoids educating HR from scratch.
Find H-1B1 Singapore jobs on Migrate Mate
Migrate Mate filters job listings by verified H-1B1 Singapore sponsorship history so you're only applying to employers who've done it before. That filing history is drawn directly from DOL disclosure data, not employer self-reporting.
Confirm the employer will certify the LCA before signing
Some employers offer roles but stall on the Labor Condition Application, which is required before you can apply at the consulate. Get written confirmation of the LCA timeline during the offer stage, not after you've resigned from your current position.
Prepare your O*NET job zone documentation early
Consular officers assess whether Lead Software Engineer qualifies as a specialty occupation. Pull the O*NET occupation profile for your specific SOC code and bring it to your interview alongside your offer letter and academic credentials to preempt any qualification questions.
Request a two-year validity stamp, not one-year
H-1B1 visas are issued for one or two years, and consulates have discretion on validity. Ask your employer's HR or filing contact to confirm the petition period requested, since a two-year stamp reduces how often you need to return for renewal stamping.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Lead Software Engineer role qualify as a specialty occupation for H-1B1 Singapore?
Yes. Lead Software Engineer consistently meets the specialty occupation standard because the role requires theoretical and practical application of computer science or a directly related field. Your employer documents this through the Labor Condition Application, and the consular officer reviews your degree transcript and job duties to confirm the connection is specific, not general.
How does the H-1B1 Singapore visa differ from the H-1B for software engineering roles?
The H-1B1 visa has no lottery and a 5,400-visa annual cap that has never filled, so Singaporean engineers can apply at the consulate after receiving a job offer without waiting for a lottery selection in April. The trade-off is that H-1B visa1 does not confer dual intent, meaning you can't use it as a direct stepping stone to a green card the way an approved H-1B petition can.
Where can I find Lead Software Engineer jobs that already sponsor the H-1B1 Singapore visa?
Migrate Mate surfaces Lead Software Engineer listings filtered by verified H-1B1 Singapore sponsorship history using DOL Labor Condition Application data. That means every employer on the platform has a documented filing record, so you're not cold-applying and hoping HR knows what the H-1B1 Singapore visa is.
Can my employer file the H-1B1 petition through USCIS instead of the consulate?
Yes, but most H-1B1 Singapore applicants go through consular processing because it's faster and doesn't require filing Form I-129 with USCIS. The USCIS route is available if you're already in the U.S. and changing status, but for Singaporeans applying from outside the country, the consulate in Singapore is the standard path.
What happens to my H-1B1 status if my Lead Software Engineer role is eliminated?
H-1B1 visa does not carry the same portability protections as H-1B, and there's no official grace period codified under H-1B1 rules the way there is for H-1B holders. If your role is eliminated, you should consult an immigration attorney immediately, as your options depend on whether you've filed for any other status and how long you've been out of valid employment.
