Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding Visa Sponsorship as a Technical Writer
Verify your degree qualifies the role
The H-1B1 visa requires your degree to match the specialty occupation, not just the industry. A communications degree supports a technical writing role in software documentation; a general arts degree may not. Cross-check your credentials against the O*NET profile for Technical Writers before applying.
Target employers with active LCA filings
Use Migrate Mate to filter for U.S. employers who have filed Labor Condition Applications for technical writing roles. DOL LCA filing history tells you which companies have already committed to H-1B1-class sponsorship, saving you from cold outreach to employers unfamiliar with the process.
Prepare a portfolio that demonstrates specialty occupation
Consular officers assess whether your role genuinely requires a degree-level specialist. Bring structured writing samples tied to engineering, software, or regulated industries. Work tied to APIs, safety standards, or compliance documentation strengthens the specialty occupation argument more than general marketing copy.
Confirm your employer will certify the LCA before signing
Your employer must file and receive DOL certification of the Labor Condition Application before your consulate appointment. Get written confirmation of that timeline before you resign your current role. LCA certification typically takes seven business days, but employer delays can push your start date.
Use OFLC Wage Search to negotiate from a position of fact
The LCA must certify a wage at or above the DOL prevailing wage for your job title and location. Run the OFLC Wage Search yourself before salary discussions so you know the wage floor. Employers who offer below that threshold cannot legally file the LCA.
Apply for a two-year validity and plan your renewal early
The H-1B1 is granted in one-year increments at the consulate but can be extended without cap exposure. If you change employers, your new employer must file a fresh LCA and you'll need to return to the consulate. Build renewal timing into your employment contract negotiations.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Technical Writer role qualify as a specialty occupation for the H-1B1 Singapore visa?
Yes, provided the role requires a bachelor's degree or higher in a directly related field, such as technical communication, engineering, computer science, or a subject-matter specialty like life sciences or software. Generalist writing roles that accept any degree may not qualify. The employer must document the degree requirement in the Labor Condition Application and be prepared to defend it at the consulate.
How does the H-1B1 Singapore visa compare to the H-1B for Technical Writers?
The H-1B1 Singapore visa skips the H-1B lottery entirely, which means no random selection and no waiting until April for a registration outcome. The annual cap of 5,400 visas for Singaporean nationals has never been exhausted, so qualified Technical Writers can apply any time of year. The trade-off is that the H-1B1 doesn't allow dual intent, meaning you can't use it as a direct stepping stone to a green card the way H-1B holders sometimes plan.
How do I find U.S. employers who will sponsor an H-1B1 Singapore visa for a Technical Writer?
Migrate Mate filters job listings by employers with documented H-1B1 and LCA filing history, so you can focus on companies that have already navigated visa sponsorship for roles in this category. Cold applications to employers unfamiliar with the H-1B1 Singapore process often stall because the LCA filing requirement is less routine than H-1B, and many HR teams need guidance before committing.
What documents should a Singaporean Technical Writer prepare for the H-1B1 consulate appointment?
You'll need your valid Singaporean passport, DS-160 confirmation, the certified Labor Condition Application from your employer, a job offer letter specifying your title and duties, your academic transcripts and degree certificates, and evidence that your field of study directly relates to the technical writing role. If your degree is in a subject-matter specialty rather than writing itself, bring documentation connecting your academic background to the documentation work you'll perform.
Can a Singaporean Technical Writer on H-1B1 change employers, and what does that involve?
Yes, but the H-1B1 doesn't carry H-1B portability rules. Your new employer must file a fresh Labor Condition Application with DOL, receive certification, and you'll need to attend a new consulate appointment in Singapore to receive a visa in the new employer's name. There's no USCIS petition involved, but the consulate step means you can't begin with the new employer the moment the LCA is approved the way a ported H-1B holder can.
