Match your credentials to H-2B requirements
H-2B visa Department Manager roles require documented supervisory experience in a seasonal industry. Gather employment records, performance reviews, and any industry certifications before applying. Gaps in your work history across seasonal contracts can raise questions during USCIS adjudication.
Target employers with active seasonal operations
Focus on hospitality groups, ski resorts, summer camps, and waterpark operators that run defined seasonal cycles. These employers already understand the DOL labor certification process and are more likely to have internal HR capacity to support H-2B filings.
Search verified sponsoring employers on Migrate Mate
Use Migrate Mate to find Department Manager openings at employers with confirmed H-2B filing history. Filtering by visa type upfront saves time and surfaces roles where sponsorship infrastructure is already in place.
Understand the cap timing before you apply
The 66,000 annual H-2B cap splits into two halves: 33,000 for October through March and 33,000 for April through September. Employers can file no earlier than 90 days before the job start date, so your target start date directly determines which cap period you're competing in.
Confirm the employer has filed the labor certification
Before accepting any offer, ask whether the employer has obtained DOL temporary labor certification for the role. Without a certified ETA-9142B, USCIS will not process the I-129 petition. This step is the employer's responsibility and cannot begin after you've already agreed to terms.
Review the prevailing wage for your work location
DOL requires H-2B employers to pay the prevailing wage for the occupation and location. Look up the wage level for Department Manager roles using the OFLC Wage Search tool before negotiating your offer. If the posted rate falls below the certified wage, the petition is at risk.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I find Department Manager jobs with H-2B visa sponsorship?
Migrate Mate is the recommended way to search for Department Manager roles where employers have verified H-2B sponsorship history. Searching general job boards often surfaces listings where visa sponsorship is unstated or unavailable. Filtering specifically for H-2B-eligible employers in seasonal industries like hospitality and recreation gives you a much more targeted and productive job search.
How does the H-2B annual cap affect my application timeline?
The H-2B program issues 66,000 visas per fiscal year, split evenly between two seasonal periods. Employers can file I-129 petitions no more than 90 days before your employment start date. If cap numbers fill early, late-filing employers are locked out entirely. Coordinating your job search and offer acceptance well in advance of your target start date is essential to staying within an open cap window.
What qualifications does a Department Manager need for H-2B sponsorship?
H-2B classification requires the role to be temporary and non-agricultural. For Department Manager positions, employers typically document a need for supervisory oversight tied to a defined seasonal peak. You'll need verifiable management experience in the relevant industry, and your employer must demonstrate through the DOL labor certification process that no qualified U.S. workers are available for the position.
Can I transfer my H-2B status to a different employer mid-season?
H-2B status is employer-specific and tied to the certified petition. If you want to work for a different employer, that new employer must file a separate I-129 petition with its own DOL labor certification. You can't simply transfer authorization between employers the way some other visa categories allow. Starting the process mid-season is difficult given DOL lead times and cap constraints.
