Verify your credential equivalency early
H-2B visa employers filing your petition need documentation that your food service management training or foreign culinary credentials meet U.S. standards. Gather transcripts, certifications, and employer letters before you start targeting positions, so you're not scrambling after an offer.
Target employers with established seasonal operations
Resorts, cruise-adjacent hospitality groups, and summer camp networks that hire Food Service Directors seasonally already understand the DOL temporary labor certification process. They're far more likely to absorb the filing timeline than a venue running its first seasonal program.
Search verified H-2B employers on Migrate Mate
Use Migrate Mate to filter Food Service Director openings by employers with documented H-2B sponsorship history, so you're applying to venues that have already navigated the DOL certification process rather than ones that may back out after an offer.
Align your application to the correct cap period
The 66,000 annual H-2B cap splits into two 33,000-slot allocations: one for October through March start dates and one for April through September. Food service roles at summer resorts fall in the second half, and slots can exhaust quickly, so your employer needs to file as soon as DOL opens the window.
Confirm the employer has filed the prevailing wage request
Before your employer can submit the temporary labor certification to DOL, they must obtain a prevailing wage determination from OFLC. Ask directly whether they've started this step. You can cross-check the wage level for your county using the OFLC Wage Search to confirm the offer aligns.
Understand what happens if your petition is filed late
If USCIS receives the I-129 petition after your proposed start date, your employer may need to adjust your employment start, which requires DOL to reissue the temporary labor certification. Confirm filing deadlines in writing before you give notice at your current position.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I find Food Service Director jobs with H-2B visa sponsorship?
Migrate Mate lets you search Food Service Director openings specifically filtered for employers with H-2B sponsorship history, so you're not wasting time on listings from venues that have never filed a temporary labor certification. General job boards rarely surface H-2B-specific roles reliably, and cold outreach to seasonal hospitality employers without a targeted list is inefficient at this management level.
How does the H-2B cap affect Food Service Director hiring timelines?
USCIS issues only 66,000 H-2B visas per fiscal year, split evenly between the two semi-annual periods. Summer resort and camp food service roles typically fall in the April through September allocation, which historically fills fast. Your employer's attorney needs to submit the DOL temporary labor certification and then the I-129 petition to USCIS as soon as the filing window opens, or your start date may slip an entire season.
Does a Food Service Director role qualify as a specialty occupation under H-2B?
H-2B is not a specialty occupation visa and has no degree requirement, which distinguishes it from the H-1B visa. What matters for Food Service Director positions is that the employer can demonstrate the need is genuinely temporary, such as a defined summer or winter season, and that the role appears on the DOL's list of eligible temporary non-agricultural occupations. You can review the O*NET occupation profile to understand how the role is classified.
Can I change employers once I'm in the U.S. on an H-2B visa?
H-2B status is employer-specific, so you can't simply transfer to a new venue the way some other visa categories allow. A new employer would need to file a separate temporary labor certification with DOL and a new I-129 petition with USCIS on your behalf before you begin work. Working for an unauthorized employer before that petition is approved puts your immigration status at risk.
