Hygienist Jobs in New York: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a hygienist in New York?
To become a registered dental hygienist in New York, you must graduate from a dental hygiene program accredited by the Commission on Dental Accreditation, pass the National Board Dental Hygiene Examination, pass a clinical examination accepted by New York State, and obtain a license through the New York State Education Department Office of the Professions. New York does not require a separate state written exam beyond the national boards, but the clinical exam and licensure application must be completed before practicing.
How much do hygienists make in New York?
Hygienists in New York earn a median of about $106,130 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $77,680 for the lowest 10% to over $126,640 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire hygienists in New York?
Employers hiring hygienists in New York right now include United Dental Corporation, Aspen Dental, and Newark Wayne Community Hospital, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. New York's dense urban markets and large integrated health systems mean that both multi-location dental groups and hospital-affiliated oral health programs post openings with regularity throughout the year.
Which New York cities have the most hygienist jobs?
The cities with the most hygienist openings in New York are Rochester, Bronx, and Manhattan. New York City drives the largest share of postings because of its concentration of dental group practices, specialty clinics, and hospital oral health programs, while Buffalo and Albany attract consistent demand from regional health systems and community health centers serving large surrounding populations.
Are there remote hygienist jobs in New York?
Yes, but they are rare. Clinical dental hygiene is hands-on chair-side work that cannot be performed remotely, so the overwhelming majority of openings require on-site presence. About 0% of hygienist openings tied to New York are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, and those positions are almost exclusively in adjacent areas such as public health education, dental consulting, or insurance review roles.
How can I get hired as a hygienist in New York with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is applying for new-graduate positions at large dental group practices such as Aspen Dental or at federally qualified health centers across New York City and Buffalo, which regularly onboard new licensees and provide structured mentorship. Graduates who complete their New York State RDH license immediately after boards and hold a current BLS certification are competitive for these roles. Part-time or per-diem hygienist positions are also common in New York and give early-career clinicians a way to build chair-side hours while pursuing permanent placement.
Where can I find and apply to hygienist jobs in New York?
You can find and apply to hygienist jobs in New York on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings tied to New York employers. Search the listings, find roles that match your license level and preferred location, and apply directly to the ones that fit.
