Industrial Engineer Jobs in Virginia: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a industrial engineer in Virginia?
Most industrial engineer roles in Virginia require a bachelor's degree in industrial engineering or a related field from an ABET-accredited program. While licensure is not mandatory for most private-sector positions, engineers who pursue a Professional Engineer license must register through the Virginia Board for Architects, Professional Engineers, Land Surveyors, Certified Interior Designers and Landscape Architects, which requires passing the FE and PE exams. Earning a Lean or Six Sigma certification significantly strengthens candidacy for Virginia's defense and manufacturing employers.
How much do industrial engineers make in Virginia?
Industrial engineers in Virginia earn a median of about $102,550 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $69,880 for the lowest 10% to over $157,160 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire industrial engineers in Virginia?
Employers hiring industrial engineers in Virginia right now include Qualdoc, ABB, and Jabil, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of August 2026. Virginia's high concentration of defense contractors, federal logistics operations, and large-scale distribution centers means industrial engineers here often work on systems efficiency and supply chain projects tied to government programs.
Which Virginia cities have the most industrial engineer jobs?
Richmond, Reston, and Petersburg have the most industrial engineer openings in Virginia right now. Northern Virginia's dense cluster of defense contractors and federal agencies drives the largest share of postings, while Richmond's manufacturing base and Hampton Roads' naval and logistics infrastructure create strong secondary markets that attract both entry-level and experienced engineers.
Are there remote industrial engineer jobs in Virginia?
Yes, but they're less common than in purely analytical fields, since industrial engineering often involves on-site process observation, facility walk-throughs, and hands-on workflow analysis. About 38% of industrial engineer openings tied to Virginia are remote or hybrid as of August 2026, with hybrid arrangements being more prevalent than fully remote. The tasks most likely to be performed remotely include data analysis, simulation modeling, reporting, and project coordination work.
How can I get hired as a industrial engineer in Virginia with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is applying directly for associate or junior industrial engineer roles at Virginia's large defense and logistics employers, many of which run structured new-graduate programs. Northrop Grumman, Leidos, and Amazon's Virginia operations all have rotational or early-career engineering tracks that welcome candidates without prior full-time experience. A strong capstone project, a Lean or Six Sigma Green Belt certification, or an internship with a Virginia manufacturer or federal contractor gives candidates a clear edge over those without practical exposure.
Where can I find and apply to industrial engineer jobs in Virginia?
You can find and apply to industrial engineer jobs in Virginia on Migrate Mate, which lists current Virginia openings updated regularly. Search the available roles, find the ones that fit your background and target location, and apply directly to the employer. No account creation is needed to view or apply to listings.
