Industrial Maintenance Technician Jobs in California: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a industrial maintenance technician in California?
The most direct path in California is completing a vocational or community college program in industrial maintenance, mechatronics, or electromechanical technology, followed by an apprenticeship registered with the California Department of Industrial Relations. California does not issue a single statewide license for general industrial maintenance technicians, but employers consistently require documented trade training, relevant certifications such as NFPA 70E electrical safety, and verifiable hands-on experience with the equipment used in their specific industry.
How much do industrial maintenance technicians make in California?
Industrial maintenance technicians in California earn a median of about $67,840 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $46,000 for the lowest 10% to over $93,440 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire industrial maintenance technicians in California?
Employers hiring industrial maintenance technicians in California right now include ABM Industries, ABM Industries, and Anheuser-Busch, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. California's concentration of food processing plants, semiconductor manufacturers, and large distribution centers means demand for qualified technicians holds up across both Northern and Southern California throughout the year.
Which California cities have the most industrial maintenance technician jobs?
Los Angeles, Livermore, and Ontario have the most industrial maintenance technician openings in California. Los Angeles and the surrounding Inland Empire drive volume through their massive logistics and food manufacturing base, while San Jose and the broader Bay Area generate demand from semiconductor fabs, utilities, and precision manufacturing facilities that require technicians with advanced electrical and automation skills.
Are there remote industrial maintenance technician jobs in California?
Yes, but they're rare. Industrial maintenance technicians work on physical equipment in plants, warehouses, and utilities, so the vast majority of roles require on-site presence. About 0% of industrial maintenance technician openings tied to California are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, and those positions typically involve remote monitoring, documentation, or technical support functions rather than hands-on repair work.
How can I get hired as a industrial maintenance technician in California with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry point is enrolling in a California community college program in industrial maintenance or mechatronics, then applying for a registered apprenticeship through the California Department of Industrial Relations, which places apprentices directly with employers. Large California food manufacturers and logistics operators regularly hire technician helpers and maintenance associates who work alongside experienced techs. Lateral moves from roles like forklift mechanic, facilities custodian, or production operator are common, and completing an OSHA 10 course or earning a basic electrical safety certification gives candidates a clear edge in screening.
Where can I find and apply to industrial maintenance technician jobs in California?
You can find and apply to industrial maintenance technician jobs in California on Migrate Mate, which lists current California openings. Find the roles that fit your experience and location and apply directly.
