Internal Medicine Physician Jobs in Tennessee: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become an internal medicine physician in Tennessee?
To practice as an internal medicine physician in Tennessee, you must obtain a medical license from the Tennessee Board of Medical Examiners, which requires completing medical school, finishing an ACGME-accredited internal medicine residency, and passing the USMLE or COMLEX licensing examinations. Board certification through the American Board of Internal Medicine is expected by most Tennessee employers, and you will also need a state-specific controlled substance registration before seeing patients.
How much do internal medicine physicians make in Tennessee?
Internal medicine physicians in Tennessee earn a median of about $232,220 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $64,870 for the lowest 10% to over $412,460 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire internal medicine physicians in Tennessee?
Employers hiring internal medicine physicians in Tennessee right now include Summit Medical Group, P.L.L.C., 77 Consultants, and Vohra Wound Physicians, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of August 2026. Tennessee's concentration of large regional health systems and academic medical centers means physician openings tend to be stable and recur regularly throughout the year.
Which Tennessee cities have the most internal medicine physician jobs?
Memphis, Chattanooga, and Powell have the most internal medicine physician openings in Tennessee. Nashville drives the largest share of listings given its density of major health system headquarters and academic institutions, while Memphis benefits from established medical school affiliations and large regional hospital networks, and Knoxville reflects steady demand from Ballad Health and growing East Tennessee multispecialty practices.
Are there remote internal medicine physician jobs in Tennessee?
Yes, but they're rare. Internal medicine is a hands-on clinical specialty, so the large majority of roles require in-person patient care at a clinic, hospital, or long-term care facility. About 20% of internal medicine physician openings tied to Tennessee are remote or hybrid as of August 2026, and those positions are almost entirely in telemedicine triage, utilization review, or population health management rather than direct inpatient or outpatient practice.
How can I get hired as an internal medicine physician in Tennessee with little or no experience?
The most realistic path for physicians early in their careers is applying directly to residency-to-employment pipeline programs run by large Tennessee systems such as Vanderbilt University Medical Center and HCA Healthcare, which regularly recruit graduating residents into employed hospitalist or outpatient attending roles. Targeting community health centers and federally qualified health clinics across Tennessee is another concrete option, as these organizations often prioritize new graduates willing to serve underserved areas. A full Tennessee medical license, active board eligibility, and a completed ACGME residency are the credentials that open the door before independent experience accumulates.
Where can I find and apply to internal medicine physician jobs in Tennessee?
