Tips for Your Investment Banker Job Search
Quantify deals on your resume
Investment banking resumes live or die on deal metrics. For every transaction you worked on, include the deal size, your role in execution, and the outcome. Vague descriptions of 'supporting deal teams' won't get you past a first screen.
Get your financial modeling skills certified
Most hiring managers expect fluency in DCF, LBO, and comparable company analysis before the first interview. A recognized financial modeling certification signals that fluency upfront and separates your application from candidates who only list Excel as a skill.
Apply early to roles that fit
Migrate Mate lists investment banker openings from across the United States in one place, so you can find roles that match your experience and apply directly to each listing without chasing down separate employer portals.
Target banks by sector coverage group
Investment banks organize hiring around industry verticals like healthcare, technology, or energy. Research which coverage group aligns with your deal experience or academic background and tailor your application to that group specifically, not the bank in general.
Prepare a pitch for the technical round
Most investment banking interviews include a live modeling or valuation exercise. Practice building a three-statement model and walking through your assumptions out loud. Interviewers care as much about how you explain your logic as whether the numbers balance.
Negotiate the full offer, not just base
Investment banking compensation is heavily weighted toward signing bonuses and year-end bonuses, not base salary. When an offer comes in, ask explicitly about the structure of the bonus, vesting timelines, and whether the signing bonus is subject to clawback provisions.
Investment Banker Jobs: Frequently Asked Questions
Which companies are hiring the most investment bankers?
The companies hiring the most investment bankers right now include JPMorganChase, Citi, and Deutsche Bank, with the largest share of openings in New York, California, and Florida, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. Demand is concentrated in bulge-bracket banks, middle-market advisory firms, and boutique investment banks focused on specific industry verticals.
How many investment banker jobs are remote?
About 10% of investment banker openings are fully remote or hybrid as of June 2026, reflecting the client-facing and deal-intensive nature of the role. Sub-areas most likely to offer remote or hybrid arrangements include financial modeling support roles, research-heavy positions, and back-office advisory functions rather than front-line client coverage.
How do you become an investment banker?
Start with a degree in finance, economics, or accounting, then build financial modeling skills through coursework or a recognized certification program. Pursue internships at banks or advisory firms during school, since most full-time analyst roles are filled through those pipelines. Pass the required FINRA licensing exams, typically the Series 79 and Series 63, before or shortly after starting your first role.
Can you get hired as an investment banker with little experience?
Yes, but the path in matters. Most entry-level analyst roles at banks recruit directly from college, so a summer internship during your junior year is the most reliable route. If you're entering without that pipeline, focus on adjacent roles in corporate finance, accounting, or equity research first, build deal exposure, and apply to smaller boutique firms that hire lateral analysts more openly than bulge-bracket banks do.
What does the investment banker interview process look like?
The process typically starts with a resume screen followed by a phone or video interview covering your background and interest in the specific group. Technical rounds come next, where you'll work through valuation questions, accounting concepts, and sometimes a live modeling exercise. Final rounds usually include multiple back-to-back interviews with senior bankers focused on deal experience, judgment, and fit with the team's culture.
Where can I find and apply to investment banker jobs?
You can find and apply to investment banker jobs on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings from employers across the United States. Search the listings by location, seniority, or specialization, find the roles that match your background, and apply directly to each one without needing to navigate separate employer career pages.
