IT Director Jobs in Tennessee: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a it director in Tennessee?
The path to an it director role in Tennessee typically begins with a bachelor's degree in information technology, computer science, or management information systems, followed by progressive years in IT management. Tennessee does not require a state-issued license for IT directors, but employers across Nashville's healthcare corridor and Memphis's logistics sector strongly prefer candidates holding certifications such as CISSP, PMP, or ITIL, which signal enterprise-level leadership readiness.
How much do IT directors make in Tennessee?
IT directors in Tennessee earn a median of about $158,700 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $98,380 for the lowest 10% to over $237,640 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire it directors in Tennessee?
Employers hiring it directors in Tennessee right now include Humana, Paramount, and OneOncology, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of September 2026. Tennessee's concentration of large hospital systems, financial institutions, and distribution companies means demand for experienced IT directors remains steady throughout the year.
Which Tennessee cities have the most it director jobs?
Nashville, Franklin, and Brentwood have the most it director openings in Tennessee. Nashville leads because of its dense cluster of healthcare systems, insurance companies, and corporate headquarters, while Memphis generates demand through its logistics, transportation, and regional banking sectors, and Knoxville reflects hiring from the University of Tennessee system and federal-connected technology contractors in the region.
Are there remote it director jobs in Tennessee?
Yes, though they are less common than for purely analytical roles since it directors frequently need to be on-site to oversee infrastructure, manage teams, and respond to operational issues. About 60% of it director openings tied to Tennessee are remote or hybrid as of September 2026. The functions most often performed remotely include strategic planning, vendor negotiation, and policy development rather than hands-on systems management.
How can I get hired as a it director in Tennessee with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is moving up from a senior systems administrator, IT manager, or network engineering role within a Tennessee organization before stepping into director-level responsibility. Large Tennessee employers like hospital networks in the Nashville area and distribution operations in Memphis often promote from within or hire IT supervisors into director tracks. Earning a PMP or ITIL certification while in a mid-level role signals readiness for strategic leadership and gives candidates a concrete edge in the application process.
