Licensed Therapist Jobs in New Jersey: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a licensed therapist in New Jersey?
Becoming a licensed therapist in New Jersey requires completing a qualifying master's or doctoral degree in counseling, social work, or a related field, then applying through the New Jersey Division of Consumer Affairs, which oversees boards for licensure as an LPC, LCSW, or LMFT. Each license requires supervised post-degree clinical hours and passing a board-approved examination such as the NCE, ASWB, or MFT national exam before full licensure is granted.
Which companies hire licensed therapists in New Jersey?
Employers hiring licensed therapists in New Jersey right now include Ivy Rehab Network, Hand & Stone Massage and Facial Spa, and Thriveworks, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of August 2026. New Jersey's large integrated health systems and community behavioral health agencies tend to post the highest volume of licensed therapist openings across inpatient, outpatient, and school-based settings.
Which New Jersey cities have the most licensed therapist jobs?
New Jersey, Jersey City, and Nutley have the most licensed therapist openings in New Jersey. Newark anchors demand through its concentration of major hospital systems and community health organizations, while Jersey City draws hiring from behavioral health practices serving the broader Hudson County population, and Cherry Hill reflects strong outpatient and private-practice activity in the densely populated South Jersey corridor near Philadelphia.
Are there remote licensed therapist jobs in New Jersey?
Yes, and more than most clinical fields, because teletherapy has become a widely accepted modality for talk-based treatment. About 34% of licensed therapist openings tied to New Jersey are remote or hybrid as of August 2026, reflecting how broadly telehealth platforms and group practices have adopted virtual care delivery. Individual therapy, psychiatric evaluations, and case management check-ins are the functions most commonly performed remotely.
How can I get hired as a licensed therapist in New Jersey with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is applying for associate or provisionally licensed roles while completing your supervised hours toward full licensure. New Jersey hospital systems such as RWJBarnabas Health and community mental health organizations like Oaks Integrated Care regularly hire clinicians at the LAC or LSW stage and provide supervision toward licensure. School districts across the state also hire counselors in training-level roles. Having a completed internship in a clinical setting and familiarity with a major EHR platform gives newer candidates a meaningful edge.
Where can I find and apply to licensed therapist jobs in New Jersey?
You can find and apply to licensed therapist jobs in New Jersey on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings from employers hiring across the state right now. Search the listings to find roles that match your license type, specialty, and preferred setting, then apply directly to the ones that fit.
