FACILITIES AND GROUNDS MAINTENANCE SPECIALIST

Position Summary

The Facilities and Grounds Maintenance Specialist keeps three designated locations safe, clean, functional, and ready for daily use. The position conducts and documents playground and designated school bus condition inspections; maintains grounds and interiors; performs routine janitorial and minor handyman work; and supports deliveries, meetings, and events. The employee follows an established facilities schedule, travels among all three locations, and responds to priorities assigned by management. The regular schedule is Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Playground Safety and Daily Readiness

• Inspect each assigned playground every workday before or as part of daily operations, following the organization's playground inspection procedure and checklist.
• Identify unsafe conditions, damaged equipment, debris, animal waste, trip hazards, sharp objects, or other concerns; correct conditions within the position's authority and promptly report items requiring repair, restriction, or follow-up.
• Tidy and appropriately arrange playground toys and materials; collect small trash and debris; empty outdoor trash receptacles; and help keep play areas ready for children and staff.
• Complete, submit, and retain playground inspection documentation as directed by the Director of Operations.

Grounds and Property Maintenance

• Maintain property perimeters, courtyards, gates, sidewalks, stairs, porches, decks, ramps, basketball areas, and other exterior spaces by sweeping, raking, removing trash and fallen branches, tidying landscape rock, and addressing weeds.
• Mow grass and perform routine landscape care, including watering outdoor plants and trees, filling the pond, pruning approved plants and trees, spreading hay, applying mulch, and maintaining raised beds and flower boxes.
• Apply approved pesticides, herbicides, and fertilizers only as assigned and in accordance with product labels, required protective measures, site procedures, and applicable safety requirements.
• Perform seasonal cleanup and preparation, including raking and bagging leaves, preparing cottage and backyard areas, and filling sandboxes before the fall semester.
• Perform manual snow and ice removal from assigned walkways, entrances, stairs, ramps, and other access areas when needed.
• Remove bird and other animal waste from exterior surfaces using appropriate sanitation and safety practices.

Janitorial and Facility Care

• Empty interior and exterior trash carts and receptacles; move carts to and from the pickup location; break down and dispose of cardboard; and maintain orderly waste areas.
• Rotate, organize, and restock designated supplies according to the weekly schedule.
• Perform routine and as-needed janitorial duties in classrooms, offices, restrooms, and other designated areas, including vacuuming, surface cleaning, responding to spills, cleaning and restocking restrooms, and emptying interior trash. Laundry is not an assigned duty.
• Perform routine handyman tasks and minor, non-licensed repairs, including plunging toilets, clearing simple drain blockages, replacing ordinary hardware, and adjusting fixtures when trained and authorized. Report problems requiring licensed or specialized repair promptly.
• Receive, unload, move, organize, and distribute supplies, materials, equipment, boxes, and deliveries as needed.
• Assemble or disassemble furniture, equipment, shelving, fixtures, playground equipment, and other items as needed; position or relocate them as assigned and follow manufacturer instructions. Playground equipment must receive required inspection and approval before use.

School Bus Safety and Inspections

• Inspect assigned school buses using the organization’s designated safety and condition checklist on the required schedule; document findings and promptly report defects, damage, or safety concerns.
• Help arrange maintenance or repairs as directed. Do not perform vehicle repairs or operate a school bus unless separately trained, authorized, and qualified for that duty.

Seasonal and Operational Support

• Adjust work activities for summer and winter schedules, weather, landscape needs, and changing site priorities.
• Assist with setup, breakdown, cleanup, and grounds preparation for meetings, events, staff activities, and other operational needs.
• Work at and travel between three designated locations according to the regular facilities schedule and as otherwise directed by management. Communicate completed work, supply needs, hazards, and deferred maintenance to the Director of Operations.
• Safely operate and maintain assigned equipment, including a lawn mower, leaf blower, and drill. Operate a circular saw, chop saw, or pole saw only when specifically authorized, trained, and assigned to do so.
• Use tools, equipment, cleaning products, landscape chemicals, and personal protective equipment safely; maintain tools and work areas in clean, serviceable condition.
• Perform other related grounds, maintenance, and facility-support duties as assigned.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• Ability to recognize common playground and property hazards and respond appropriately to protect children, staff, families, and visitors.
• Working knowledge of basic groundskeeping, landscape maintenance, exterior cleaning, landscape chemical safety, and safe use of common hand and powered equipment.
• Ability to follow written checklists, safety procedures, product instructions, and verbal directions; complete documentation accurately; and manage recurring tasks independently.
• Dependable attendance, punctuality, sound judgment, attention to detail, and the ability to prioritize safety-sensitive work.
• Professional communication and the ability to work respectfully around young children, families, employees, and visitors.
• Maintain a valid driver’s license and reliable transportation for authorized travel between assigned work locations.
• Maintain eligibility under required childcare background checks and clearances throughout employment.

Travel and Employment Requirements

• Authorized use of a personal vehicle for travel between work locations during the workday is reimbursed under the organization’s mileage reimbursement policy. Ordinary travel between home and the assigned starting or ending location is not reimbursable.
• Employment is contingent on successful completion of required childcare related background checks and clearances, a pre-employment drug screen, and verification of a valid driver’s license.

Training and Experience

• Prior experience in groundskeeping, landscaping, custodial work, property maintenance, or a related field is preferred.
• Experience safely operating a lawn mower, leaf blower, drill, and related groundskeeping equipment is preferred; experience with a circular saw, chop saw, and pole saw is beneficial when those tools are assigned.
• Complete training on the organization’s school bus inspection procedure and documentation requirements. Equivalent combinations of relevant experience, training, and demonstrated ability may be considered.

Physical Demands and Work Environment

• Work is performed primarily outdoors throughout the year and may involve heat, cold, wind, dust, pollen, precipitation, uneven surfaces, insects, and exposure to ordinary landscape and cleaning materials.
• The position regularly requires standing, walking, bending, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, pushing, pulling, gripping, sweeping, raking, and working on stairs or uneven ground.
• The employee must be able to lift and carry up to 50 pounds and move or position the tools, supplies, trash, landscape materials, and equipment required for assigned duties, with assistance or appropriate equipment when needed.
• The employee must be able to safely operate assigned tools and equipment and wear required personal protective equipment.

Performance Expectations

• Playground and assigned school bus inspections are completed and documented consistently; safety concerns are addressed or reported without delay.
• Assigned grounds, play areas, vehicles, interiors, walkways, and support spaces are maintained in a safe, clean, and orderly condition.
• Daily, weekly, monthly, and seasonal responsibilities are completed reliably, with timely communication when weather, safety, supply, or repair issues affect completion.
• Work is performed in accordance with organizational policies, site procedures, equipment instructions, and applicable health and safety practices.

Pay: $18.00 - $22.00 per hour

Expected hours: 25.0 – 30.0 per week
