Position Summary
Are you a licensed HVAC professional who thrives on solving complex mechanical challenges and keeping critical systems running smoothly? Do you enjoy working in a fast-paced, mission-driven environment where your skills directly support education, research, and healthcare? The University of New Mexico is seeking a skilled and safety-conscious HVAC Tech 2 to join our Facility Services team. In this essential role, you’ll help maintain and optimize the heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems that keep our campus comfortable and operational year-round.
Key Responsibilities:
As an HVAC Tech 2, you will:
- Perform troubleshooting and repair of building distribution systems including low-pressure steam, heat exchangers, hot and cold deck systems, air handlers, and pneumatic/digital controls.
- Conduct HVAC system inspections and perform manufacturer-recommended preventive maintenance.
- Replace major components in coordination with central energy management and control system operators.
- Lead seasonal overhauls and guide repair teams during system transitions between heating and cooling.
- Monitor and adjust system setpoints and outputs using remote computer links and programmable logic controls.
- Ensure proper care and maintenance of tools, equipment, and supplies.
- Promote continuous improvement in workplace safety and environmental practices.
- Perform miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.
Please Note: Because this is a pooled position posting it may require you to work in the Health Sciences Center (HSC) area of UNM. This means you will be working in medical laboratory research, medical clinical, and medical academic spaces. These HSC environments may require the donning of medically approved personal protective equipment (PPE).
Additionally, this position is subject to overtime and on-call assignments, which may include evenings, weekends, and holidays as needed to support campus operations.

Conditions of Employment
- Possession of a valid New Mexico driver's license is a requirement for this job.
- Must pass a pre-employment criminal background check.
- Successful candidate must submit to post-offer, pre-employment physical examination and medical history check.
- Must maintain certification status.
- All regular, non-temporary positions assigned to this classification are represented by a labor union and subject to the terms and conditions of the CWA Collective Bargaining Agreement.
- Employees who provide services or work in patient care or clinical areas are required to be in compliance with the University's influenza vaccination requirement.
Minimum Qualifications
High school diploma or GED; at least 4 years of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified. Possession of a current New Mexico State Journeyman's Refrigeration License (JR) and EPA Universal Refrigerant Recovery Certification.
Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with commercial HVAC systems and digital controls
- Knowledge of low-pressure steam and chilled water distribution
- Familiarity with programmable logic controllers and remote monitoring systems
- Ability to lead seasonal system transitions and mentor technician
