HVAC Jobs in New York: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a hvac in New York?
Most hvac technicians in New York enter the trade through a registered apprenticeship, typically sponsored by a union local such as UA Local 638 (Steam, Gas and General Pipefitters) or through a state-approved trade school program. After completing an apprenticeship or vocational program, technicians must hold EPA Section 608 certification to handle refrigerants, which is required by federal law and enforced across New York. New York City additionally requires specific Department of Buildings certificates for certain systems work.
How much do HVACs make in New York?
HVACs in New York earn a median of about $74,430 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $48,560 for the lowest 10% to over $100,680 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire hvacs in New York?
Employers hiring hvacs in New York right now include Verizon, CBRE, and Johnson Controls, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. New York's dense building stock and active construction pipeline mean large mechanical contractors, hospital systems, and public agencies maintain consistent year-round hiring rather than seasonal surges.
Which New York cities have the most hvac jobs?
New York, Buffalo, and Schenectady have the most hvac openings in New York. New York City dominates by volume because of its enormous commercial and residential building inventory, while Buffalo and Albany generate steady demand through healthcare campuses, manufacturing facilities, and state government properties that require ongoing mechanical maintenance and upgrades.
Are there remote hvac jobs in New York?
Yes, but they're rare. HVAC work is almost entirely hands-on and site-dependent, so remote arrangements are the exception rather than the rule. About 7% of hvac openings tied to New York are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, and those roles tend to be in estimating, controls programming, or project coordination rather than field service or installation.
How can I get hired as a hvac in New York with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is applying directly to a registered apprenticeship through a union local such as UA Local 638 or the Sheet Metal Workers Local 28, both of which run structured multi-year programs for candidates with no prior trade experience. Larger mechanical contractors and building service firms in New York City, Buffalo, and Albany also hire entry-level helpers and maintenance assistants who work alongside journeymen. Earning EPA Section 608 certification before applying gives candidates a concrete edge even without field hours.
Where can I find and apply to hvac jobs in New York?
You can find and apply to hvac jobs in New York on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings across New York City, Buffalo, Albany, and the rest of the state. Find roles that fit your experience and credentials and apply directly to the employer.
