Maintenance Specialist Jobs in California: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a maintenance specialist in California?
Most maintenance specialists in California enter through a combination of vocational training and on-the-job experience, often completing programs at a California community college in facilities maintenance, HVAC technology, or industrial maintenance. EPA 608 certification is required for any work involving refrigerants. Employers also look for completion of a California-registered apprenticeship through programs administered by the Division of Apprenticeship Standards, particularly in electrical and mechanical trades.
How much do maintenance specialists make in California?
Maintenance specialists in California earn a median of about $57,000 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $38,810 for the lowest 10% to over $82,710 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire maintenance specialists in California?
Employers hiring maintenance specialists in California right now include Keysight Technologies, Web Team Associates, and CarMax, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. California's scale and diversity mean openings are spread across commercial real estate firms, hospital networks, hotel chains, and large manufacturing operations throughout the state.
Which California cities have the most maintenance specialist jobs?
Santa Rosa, Los Angeles, and Noisy Le Sec account for the greatest concentration of maintenance specialist openings in California. Los Angeles draws the highest volume given its enormous commercial real estate and hospitality base, while San Diego and the Bay Area are anchored by healthcare systems, biotech campuses, and large corporate office portfolios that generate consistent facilities maintenance demand.
Are there remote maintenance specialist jobs in California?
Yes, but they're rare. Maintenance specialist work is fundamentally hands-on and site-dependent, so most roles require a physical presence. About 7% of maintenance specialist openings tied to California are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, and those positions tend to involve coordination, scheduling, or facilities management oversight rather than direct technical repairs.
How can I get hired as a maintenance specialist in California with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is applying for a maintenance technician assistant or facilities service worker role at a large property management company or hospital system such as CBRE, Cushman and Wakefield, or a UC Health campus, which routinely hire candidates without extensive experience and provide structured on-the-job training. Completing a maintenance technology certificate at a California community college and obtaining EPA 608 certification significantly strengthens an application and can substitute for experience at many employers.
Where can I find and apply to maintenance specialist jobs in California?
You can find and apply to maintenance specialist jobs in California on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings tied to California employers. Search the available roles, find the ones that match your skills and location, and apply directly to the positions that fit.
