Operations Technician Jobs in California: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a operations technician in California?
Most operations technician roles in California are accessible with a high school diploma plus relevant vocational training, though an associate degree in industrial technology, process technology, or a related field makes candidates significantly more competitive. Utility-specific roles may require a Grade T1 through T4 Water Treatment or Distribution Operator certificate issued by the California State Water Resources Control Board. Completing an apprenticeship through a California community college or a union program is a common and practical path for breaking into the field.
Which companies hire operations technicians in California?
Employers hiring operations technicians in California right now include Caliber Collision, Joby Aviation, and The Home Depot, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. California's concentration of semiconductor fabs, petroleum refineries, and large municipal utility districts means consistent openings with employers that maintain permanent, full-time operations teams rather than project-based hiring.
Which California cities have the most operations technician jobs?
The California cities with the most operations technician openings are San Jose, San Francisco, and Los Angeles. Los Angeles anchors demand through its water utility, port operations, and industrial manufacturing base, while San Jose's concentration of semiconductor and advanced manufacturing campuses drives hiring in the Bay Area, and secondary markets like Fresno and Bakersfield reflect the Central Valley's energy and agricultural processing industries.
Are there remote operations technician jobs in California?
Yes, but they're rare. Operations technician work is hands-on by nature, requiring physical presence at facilities, plants, or equipment sites. About 5% of operations technician openings tied to California are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, and those tend to cover administrative coordination, remote monitoring of SCADA systems, or technical documentation roles rather than core field or plant operations duties.
How can I get hired as a operations technician in California with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is applying for an operations technician trainee or maintenance technician associate role at a California municipal utility or large manufacturer, where on-the-job training is built into the position. The Los Angeles Department of Water and Power, Pacific Gas and Electric, and regional water districts run structured entry-level programs that develop operators from scratch. Lateral moves from quality control technician, production associate, or facilities maintenance roles are common. Earning a California Grade T1 Water Treatment Operator certificate or completing an OSHA 30 course before applying gives candidates a meaningful edge.
Where can I find and apply to operations technician jobs in California?
You can find and apply to operations technician jobs in California on Migrate Mate, which lists current California openings across industries including utilities, manufacturing, and energy. Find roles that fit your experience and location and apply directly to the employer through the listing.
