Equipment Maintenance Technician Jobs in California: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a equipment maintenance technician in California?
The most direct path is completing a vocational program or community college certificate in industrial maintenance technology, millwright work, or mechatronics at schools such as Los Angeles Trade-Technical College or Sacramento City College. California does not require a single statewide license for the general role, but technicians working on HVAC systems must hold a California Contractor license through the Contractors State License Board, and those handling refrigerants need an EPA Section 608 certification.
How much do equipment maintenance technicians make in California?
Equipment maintenance technicians in California earn a median of about $67,840 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $46,000 for the lowest 10% to over $93,440 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire equipment maintenance technicians in California?
Employers hiring equipment maintenance technicians in California right now include Bloom Energy, FormFactor, and Atosa USA, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. California's dense concentration of aerospace manufacturers, food and beverage processors, and large utility companies means openings appear regularly across a wide range of industries and facility sizes.
Which California cities have the most equipment maintenance technician jobs?
Fremont, Livermore, and Brea lead California for equipment maintenance technician openings. Los Angeles and the surrounding Inland Empire drive volume through large aerospace, logistics, and manufacturing facilities, while the Bay Area's semiconductor fabrication plants and biotech campuses fuel demand in that region, and Fresno anchors Central Valley agricultural processing and food production operations.
Are there remote equipment maintenance technician jobs in California?
Yes, but they're rare. Equipment maintenance technician work is inherently hands-on and tied to physical machinery, so most positions require on-site presence. About 0% of equipment maintenance technician openings tied to California are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, and those tend to involve technical documentation review, remote diagnostics coordination, or vendor support roles rather than direct equipment servicing.
How can I get hired as a equipment maintenance technician in California with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is applying through a Joint Apprenticeship Training Committee program registered with California's Division of Apprenticeship Standards, which places candidates with employers while providing paid on-the-job training. Large California manufacturers and utilities such as Southern California Edison run associate technician and maintenance helper programs designed for applicants without full experience. Starting in a facilities maintenance assistant or production operator role is a common lateral move that opens the door to technician positions, and earning an EPA Section 608 certification early gives candidates a concrete edge.
Where can I find and apply to equipment maintenance technician jobs in California?
You can find and apply to equipment maintenance technician jobs in California on Migrate Mate, which lists current California openings updated regularly. Search the available roles, identify the ones that match your experience and location, and apply directly to the employers posting them.
