Mechanical Design Engineer - Advanced Engineering

Techtronic Industries, the world leader in cordless technology across Outdoor Power Equipment, Power Tools, Floor Care Appliances, and Accessories, is seeking a Mechanical Design Engineer for the Ryobi Outdoor Products Advanced Engineering team at our Innovation Center in Anderson, SC.

This role is ideal for a hands-on mechanical engineer who enjoys turning ambiguous product ideas into working, tested, manufacturable solutions before they enter formal product development. You will help develop future outdoor power equipment technologies by converting early concepts into validated mechanical systems that improve performance, durability, user experience, and manufacturability.

Advanced Engineering operates upstream of traditional new product development. The team explores new mechanisms, proves out key technical assumptions, reduces risk through analysis, prototyping, and testing, and transitions mature concepts to product development teams.

The Advanced Engineering team is highly collaborative, deeply hands-on, and driven by curiosity, learning, and practical problem solving as we develop innovative outdoor products that create real value for our customers.

What You’ll Do:

• Develop advanced mechanical concepts for next-generation outdoor power equipment and battery-powered outdoor products
• Create mechanisms, structures, and integrated assemblies that balance performance, durability, manufacturability, cost, and user experience
• Use first-principles analysis, hand calculations, simulation, benchmarking, and test data to guide design decisions
• Build, test, and iterate functional prototypes to quickly validate key assumptions, identify risks, and mature concepts
• Define system requirements, user operation methods, design trade-offs, and acceptance criteria for advanced mechanical systems
• Translate early concepts into robust, production-minded designs that can be handed off to downstream engineering teams
• Partner with Product Management, Engineering, Industrial Design, Manufacturing, Quality, and other cross-functional teams to develop balanced technical solutions
• Communicate technical findings, risks, recommendations, and next steps clearly to engineering leadership and project stakeholders
• Support project planning by contributing to milestone definition, schedule inputs, prototype needs, and technical risk assessments

Required Qualifications:

• B.S. in Mechanical Engineering or a related engineering discipline
• 3+ years of mechanical design experience in product development, advanced engineering, concept maturation, or innovation-focused roles
• Strong proficiency with 3D CAD, such as NX, SolidWorks, or similar tools
• Strong mechanical design fundamentals, including mechanisms, structures, engineering materials, manufacturing processes, and tolerance considerations
• Experience building prototypes, developing test plans, evaluating results, and using data to improve designs
• Ability to manage multiple projects or concepts at different stages of maturity
• Ability to work with a high degree of autonomy, ownership, curiosity, and proactivity
• Willingness to travel approximately 5-10%, including domestic and international travel as needed

Preferred Qualifications:

• Experience designing consumer products, outdoor power equipment, power tools, or similar high-volume mechanical products
• Experience using FEA, CFD, dynamic simulation, gear design tools, or other advanced analysis methods to guide product design
• Experience with rapid prototyping across multiple materials and processes
• Familiarity with vibration, sound, airflow, thermal, durability, or performance testing
• Familiarity with integrated electrical and mechanical systems, including motors, batteries, sensors, and control interfaces
• Advanced degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field

Tools & Technologies:
Candidates should be comfortable using modern engineering tools to develop, analyze, communicate, and validate mechanical designs.

• Relevant tools include MS Office, NX, SolidWorks, Ansys Mechanical, LS-DYNA, Fluent, Discovery, KISSsoft, rapid prototyping equipment, and measurement tools for vibration, sound, airflow, durability, or product performance.
