Mechanical Engineering Intern Jobs in Kansas: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a mechanical engineering intern in Kansas?
The most direct path is enrollment in an ABET-accredited mechanical engineering program at a Kansas university, such as Kansas State University, the University of Kansas, or Wichita State University. Kansas does not require a state license for intern-level work, but employers typically expect active enrollment, completed core engineering coursework, and a faculty or career-center referral. Applying through university co-op and internship offices gives candidates the strongest pipeline into Kansas manufacturing and aerospace employers.
Which companies hire mechanical engineering interns in Kansas?
Companies currently hiring mechanical engineering interns in Kansas include CVS Health, Walgreens, and Stormont Vail Health, per current listings on Migrate Mate as of July 2026. Kansas's concentration of aerospace primes, industrial manufacturers, and engineering consultancies means intern openings recur each semester across both large corporations and mid-size specialty firms.
Which Kansas cities have the most mechanical engineering intern jobs?
Wichita, Topeka, and Overland Park hold the most mechanical engineering intern openings in Kansas. Wichita dominates because of its dense aerospace and aviation manufacturing base, while Kansas City and Overland Park draw openings from energy consulting firms, industrial contractors, and corporate engineering centers that operate out of the metro's southern suburbs.
Are there remote mechanical engineering intern jobs in Kansas?
Yes, but they're rare. Mechanical engineering internships are heavily hands-on, involving lab work, prototyping, and facility-based testing, which limits remote options. About 23% of mechanical engineering intern openings tied to Kansas are remote or hybrid as of July 2026, and those positions are most often in simulation, data analysis, or computational modeling sub-specialties that don't require physical access to equipment.
How can I get hired as a mechanical engineering intern in Kansas with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is applying through your university's co-op program before accumulating outside experience. Wichita State University's National Institute for Aviation Research and Kansas State's engineering college both connect students directly with Kansas employers for first placements. Candidates with no prior internship experience can strengthen their application with a CAD portfolio, a senior design project, or a student chapter role in ASME. Entry-level technician or engineering aide positions at Kansas manufacturers are also a recognized lateral entry point.
Where can I find and apply to mechanical engineering intern jobs in Kansas?
You can find and apply to mechanical engineering intern jobs in Kansas on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings across the state. Search the available roles, identify the ones that match your background and availability, and apply directly to the positions that fit.
