Physician Jobs in South Dakota: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a physician in South Dakota?
You must hold an MD or DO degree, complete an accredited residency, and obtain a medical license from the South Dakota Board of Medical Examiners before practicing in the state. The board requires passing scores on the USMLE or COMLEX, verification of graduate medical education, and a background check. Physicians already licensed in another state may qualify for licensure by endorsement if their credentials meet South Dakota's standards.
Which companies hire physicians in South Dakota?
South Dakota physician roles are posted by Avera Health, Sanford Health, and US Department of Veterans Affairs and others right now, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of August 2026. Sanford Health, Avera Health, and Monument Health collectively operate the majority of the state's hospitals, clinics, and specialty centers, making them the most consistent sources of physician openings across all specialties and regions.
Which South Dakota cities have the most physician jobs?
Sioux Falls, Aberdeen, and Mitchell lead South Dakota for physician openings. Sioux Falls drives the highest volume as home to Sanford Health and Avera Health's flagship campuses, while Rapid City reflects Monument Health's regional hub on the western side of the state, and smaller cities like Aberdeen and Watertown see consistent demand tied to regional medical centers serving surrounding rural communities.
Are there remote physician jobs in South Dakota?
Yes, but they're rare. About 33% of physician openings tied to South Dakota are remote or hybrid as of August 2026, since most physician work requires direct patient contact. Telehealth roles in psychiatry, behavioral health, and certain chronic-disease management specialties represent the most realistic remote opportunities available to South Dakota physicians.
How can I get hired as a physician in South Dakota with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is applying directly to Sanford Health, Avera Health, or Monument Health, all of which regularly recruit new residency graduates through structured onboarding and mentorship programs at their larger facilities. Fellowship-trained candidates and those completing rural or underserved-area rotations often have an advantage given the state's ongoing need in primary care and psychiatry. Holding an active South Dakota medical license and board certification or eligibility before applying removes a common early barrier.
Where can I find and apply to physician jobs in South Dakota?
You can find and apply to physician jobs in South Dakota on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings from employers across the state. Search the roles available, find the ones that match your specialty and preferred location, and apply directly to the positions that fit your background and goals.
